Jenna Bush embarks on book 'Journey'
Hopes to inspire kids to tackle poverty, HIV and 'exclusion'

USA TODAY

Jenna Bush, in a rare interview, says her forthcoming book for teens — about a 17-year-old single mother in Panama who is living with HIV — will end with a "call to action."

HarperCollins announces today that it's publishing Bush's Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope this fall. It will be illustrated with photographs by Mia Baxter, a former classmate of Bush's at the University of Texas.

The president's daughter, 25, says the book is not political. It's aimed at "getting kids thinking and involved," Bush said Monday by phone from Panama, where she has worked since September as an unpaid intern for UNICEF.

Bush, a former public school teacher in Washington, D.C., says: "I'm aware that not all kids can pick up and fly to Panama. I'm very lucky."

But, Bush says, "there's so much they can do" to deal with issues of "exclusion" — from research on HIV discrimination to "inviting new kids to sit with them in the cafeteria."

12. I thought she got a job in a Charter School as a Teacher's Aide
that is a BIG difference.

I called that school to ask them why they would hire someone who stuck her tongue
out at people and was all over the news drunk on the floor in bars.

They had no ready answer.

I don't recall ever seeing or hearing about her "teaching experience" again.

No photo ops with the children as they progressed through their learning experience that I recall.

9. Doing Something
I think we should give her just a little credit. I do not think she is the greatest person, but at least she seems to be doing something. I hope she is really trying to do some good in the world and not just pretending to care. However, if she really cares and is really trying to do something than I will give her her props. I do also question whether Harpers Collins could have allowed someone else who has done more to write a book about their experiences. Maybe they thought Bush would be able to get more publicity for the issue.

18. Don't you know she's coming home with me
Panama
Van Halen

Jump back, what's that sound
Here she comes, full blast and top down
Hot shoe, burnin' down the avenue
Model citizen zero discipline

Don't you know she's coming home with me
You'll lose her in the turn
I'll get her

Panama, Panama
Panama, Panama

Ain't nothin' like it, her shiny machine
Got the feel for the wheel
Kept the moving parts clean
Hot shoe, burnin' down the avenue
Got an on-ramp comin' through my bedroom

Don't you know she's coming home with me
You'll lose her in the turn
I'll get her

Chorus

Yeah, we're runnin' a little bit hot tonight
I can barely see the road from the heat comin' off of it
You reach down, between my legs
Ease the seat back

She's blinding, I'm flying
Right behind the rear-view mirror now
Got the feeling, power steering
Pistons popping, ain't no stopping now

Chorus

19. I can almost guarantee there is a ghost writer
involved in some way with this project. Jenna Bush is lending what little cache exists for that family to sell books. If it raises awareness about HIV and AIDS then good but I do not give Jenna kudos.

People die prematurely of HIV and AIDS due to policies of her father and those who surround him. If she wants to do something to halt the spread of HIV and AIDS then maybe she can go to daddy and say that abstinence only education DOES NOT WORK! CONDOMS and education for females work. Raising the living standards and opportunities for women worldwide work not platitudes from an over priviledged brat.

When she challenges policies of her daddy's administration then I'll give her kudos.

39. I'm sure that her experiences are bookworthy
Same with her sister's working in the AIDS orphanage in South Africa. It's good that they have had these experiences and if Jenna can inspire more people to donate to causes that help people with AIDS or help prevent AIDS, then it's pretty difficult to criticize her for writing a book.

16. I, for one, am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt
I've never been one to really dump on the Bush twins. It's not their fault that their dad is a powerful drug-addicted, homicidal maniac. I think about what I'd do if I were young, incredibly wealthy and privileged, and I had a parent like that. If I had a real brain and/or an conscience whatsoever, I'd probably want to kill myself. I might just "act out" by being a hardcore international partier. But with maturity, eventually I would use my position in society to do something good. Maybe that's what she's doing.

We'll see.

Remember, Ronald Reagan's kids turned out pretty well (well, at least Patty Davis and Ron Reagan did), and their dad was arguably the worst scourge that ever infected the White House prior to George.

30. no, we must hate her
the sins of the father must be visited upon the children. after all, when she was in college and as a young adult, she partied god, can you imagine? a young, affluent, educated woman going to bars? Why, I never.

it's funny, really, Chelsea Clinton takes high paying job for a for-profit firm contributing to higher health care costs (what do you think health care consulting firms do, anyway? they make health care firms more money) meanwhile, both bush daughters work in the non-profit sector and they are lambasted for it. It is just as unfair as the wingnuts blasting Chelsea because of who her parents are.

27. How Did She Get the Internship
I am one of the people who gave Bush a little credit for seeming to do something; however, I am just wondering how she got the internship. I looked up the internship, but found that only people who are in graduate or post-graduate school are supposed to be given the internship. I read in the frequently asked questions section that a bachelor's degree is not enough to get an internship. In addition, one must be in school to get the internship. Once a person has completed graduate school they cannot perform the internship unless they go back and start a phd program. So is Jenna Bush in graduate school and I did not know about it?

28. well, if Jenna's been sitting down and listening to what the UNICEF people have to say ...
... she may very well be learning something. Certainly more than she'd get from her dad's advisors. While she's at it, hanging around with Stephen Lewis and others who have been working on these issues for a long time would also be good. If there are people out there who will only think this is important because "the President's daughter is talking about it", this could help ... and we need all the help we can get now.

Exposure to the things she's been working with in Panama can change your perception about a lot of things. Many presidents kids end up with very different viewpoints on many issues than their father. Ron Reagan anyone?

And there is absolutely no way this book can officially "be political" considering the position she is taking and who her parents are and the policies her parents support.

But, it is political. Anyone who tries to do anything about this problem runs right up against the policies that the right-wingers push.

36. Bush's daughter writes book on teen mom with HIV
NEW YORK (Reuters) - After years of steering clear of the spotlight, one of President George W. Bush's twin daughters is writing a book about a teen mother in Central America who has the AIDS virus.

Jenna Bush, 25, will release in the fall "Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope," based on her work as an unpaid intern with United Nation's children's agency UNICEF.

Publisher HarperCollins said in a statement on Tuesday that it had bought the world rights to the book.

Susan Katz, publisher of HarperCollins Children's Books, said the young-adult, non-fiction project would be based on Bush's experiences with UNICEF in Central America. It will focus on the story of a 17-year-old single mother living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS .
