Arabs want U.N. timetable for U.S. withdrawal

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Arab League said on Sunday the United Nations Security Council
should set a timetable for the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Iraq.

Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa listed what the Cairo-based organization
believed were the key issues for easing the crisis in Iraq.

Apart from setting a timetable for U.S.-led coalition to leave, the list also includes a
call for the fair distribution of wealth and the disbanding of all militias, which are
demands that Arab leaders have repeated many times.

1. Ex-envoy casts doubt on Iraq conference

CAIRO, Egypt - The former Arab League envoy to Baghdad said in an interview Saturday that he did not believe the upcoming conference of Iraq's neighbors would calm and stabilize the country.

Mokhtar Lamani, who resigned last month, spoke as the Arab League prepared to send envoys to the conference next Saturday in the Iraqi capital, which will bring together representatives from Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, the United States and other Western powers.

Lamani said he was skeptical about the conference and that he did not think the parties at the gathering would agree to put sufficient pressure on various Iraqi armed groups for a cease-fire.

CAIRO (AP)--Iraq's foreign minister Monday said his government would oppose efforts to involve the U.N. Security Council in plans to stem the violence in Iraq, insisting his country would solve its own crisis.

Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari was responding to comments made Sunday by Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa who suggested that Arab governments may take recommendations they have on quelling the bloodshed in Iraq to the Security Council.

"There have been some ideas about internationalizing the Iraqi issue. This is totally rejected by us. The Iraqi government is elected by its people and it is able to deal with the situation," Zebari told The Associated Press in an interview at a downtown Cairo hotel.
