NYT: G.O.P. Candidates Criticize Slur by Conservative Author
Edited on Sat Mar-03-07 11:25 PM by RamboLiberal
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/04/us/politics/04coulter.html

Three of the leading Republican presidential candidates on Saturday denounced one of their party’s best-known conservative commentators for using an antigay epithet when discussing a Democratic presidential contender at a gathering of conservatives here.

<snip>

Ms. Coulter, asked for a reaction to the Republican criticism, said in an e-mail message: “C’mon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean.”

<snip>

Of the major Republican candidates, only Mr. McCain did not attend, but he denounced her remarks on Saturday morning. “The comments were wildly inappropriate,” said his spokesman, Brian Jones.

Mr. Giuliani said, “The comments were completely inappropriate and there should be no place for such name-calling in political debate.”

Kevin Madden, a spokesman for Mr. Romney, said: “It was an offensive remark. Governor Romney believes all people should be treated with dignity and respect.”

Noticed she's trying to slither out of her remarks with her usual "it was a joke" lie.

4. But you all clapped when she said it, didn't you?
Ooops, we thought it was still okay to make fun of teh gay. Okay, if you're going to get all snitty about it, we'll all say it was "inappropriate." Not offensive, mind you. Not hateful. "Inappropriate." Chew on that one for a few seconds.

And now, what will happen? Will Little Arfin' Annie's appearances on the cable shows be curtailed? Will she become persona non grata? Will any of her admirers suddenly quit calling? When there's two hours to air time, and their guest just called to cancel, will her card in the rolodex suddenly start calling like a siren?

Watch very carefully what they do about Ms. Coulter; not what they say.

I have no doubt, whatsoever, what they'll DO about Coulter: N-O-T-H-I-N-G. They'll blather on & on and won't actually DO anything at all.

We'll hear some platitudes about how "inappropriate" Coulter was. What a shock! What in the fuck did they expect? When has she EVER been appropriate? She's just a loud-mouthed jackass who brays a bunch of bullshit that the press is too willing to pass along to the rest of us, packaged as "news."

She doesn't deserve the attention--good or bad. She should be left to her own devices, and with her narcissistic personality, she'd go mad very quickly. . .

6. This proves it is good to respond to Coulter
All the folk who say we should not respond to Coulter should pay attention.
Obviously, we should respond and Edwards should respond.
The fact that the Republican presidential candidates are distancing themselves from her remarks as fast as they can is evidence.

I've only skimmed through some of the threads on this subject today but from what I have seen I am absolutely amazed at those that say the Democrats should not respond.

I was at the Rainbow Gathering in 1976 in Montana.
No A-camper from then would suggest anything like what you have posted.
If that is what the A-Camp has become these days then what I have heard about the degeneration of the Gatherings is true.

I've also met plenty of Deadheads who are quite right wing or apolitical in such a way that they might as well be.
That whole scene also detiorated quite a bit somewhere in the mid 80s.

37. Nonsense
As I said below, all this does is gives Republicans an opportunity to appear morally superior. They aren't going to change. Their apologies and 'distancing' mean nothing.

"The Republicans clearly haven’t learned a thing from the November election. They have absolutely no intention of setting either a new tone of respect in Washington or a new responsiveness to the American people. Indeed, it’s more of the same. More of the same in Iraq. More of the same in Congress. More of the same ridicule and mockery. More of the same win at all costs power politics.

Would Republicans denouncing a juvenile smear indicate the scales had miraculously fallen from their eyes? This has been their style since they called Roosevelt a Communist in the 1930’s and 40’s. No public denouncement would convince me they intend to change. In fact, it’s insulting to even give them the opportunity to apologize, as many times as they’ve proven this is their preferred modus operandi. Haven’t they used up their three strikes by now? The sorry fact of the matter is, Ann Coulter’s remarks are the ripples Republicans send out into the world. It’s What They Do."

41. Way to misread my point
I'm not surprised given my memories of such things a couple of years ago.
Nowhere did I say anything that indicates the Republicans have changed one bit.
All my comment about distancing has to do with is that they have to give the appearance of distancing themselves from Coulter's statement & I don't believe that they have changed either -- so I am in agreement with you on that point.
As for appearing morally superior - it doesn't take much to appear morally superior to Coulter, the real question is whether they also can appear morally superior to the Democrats.
I don't think this particular situation really gives them that opportunity, but whether it does or not is a more ambiguous question.

After all, she's endorsing Romney. These Repubs take the high road and denounce Coulter and simultaneously trash Romney because he's all gooey for Coulter.

31. Exactly. What kind of leadership is exhibited
by such passive acquiescence? Do we really need another leader who will sit for seven minutes looking dumbstruck when action is needed? Why didn't one of these "restoring dignity" to the administration types just stand up and tell her to her face that her comments were "inappropriate?" And yet Gore and Kerry were painted with the wimpy liberal brush? These proud warriors were afraid of a 90-lb weakling with a mean streak.
What cowards.

18. Molly Ivins called these scumbags "Lyin Bullies"
Lyin' Bully

The kind of humor Limbaugh uses troubles me deeply, because I have spent much of my professional life making fun of politicians. I believe it is a great American tradition and should be encouraged. We should all laugh more at our elected officials--it's good for us and good for them. So what right do I have to object because Limbaugh makes fun of different pols than I do?

I object because he consistently targets dead people, little girls, and the homeless--none of whom are in a particularly good position to answer back. Satire is a weapon, and it can be quite cruel. It has historically been the weapon of powerless people aimed at the powerful. When you use satire against powerless people, as Limbaugh does, it is not only cruel, it's profoundly vulgar. It is like kicking a cripple.

On his TV show, early in the Clinton administration, Limbaugh put up a picture of Socks, the White House cat, and asked, "Did you know there's a White House dog?" Then he put up a picture of Chelsea Clinton, who was 13 years old at the time and as far as I know had never done any harm to anyone.

When viewers objected, he claimed, in typical Limbaugh fashion, that the gag was an accident and that without his permission some technician had put up the picture of Chelsea--which I found as disgusting as his original attempt at humor.

There's nothing "funny" about Coulter - s/he's just trash and certainly wish the garbage collectors would just take her out.

Ann Coulter's inappropriate 'humor' is no secret. These guys knew exactly what they were getting when the hired her to speak. Now they are criticizing her remarks because 'OOOOPSIE!' they remarks were revealed in the media. Bummer.

I don't cut the GOP any slack regarding Coulter and I hope they stay true to form and trot her out more often for more inappropriate remarks that reflect what the GOP is really thinking. She does us a terrific service by blathering on at GOP events. By applauding her hate-filled rhetoric they give a a true glimpse of what they are all about.

Thank you Ann! :loveya:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Prominent politicians from both parties and a gay-rights group on Saturday condemned right-wing commentator Ann Coulter for her reference Friday to Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards as a "faggot."

"Ann Coulter's use of an anti-gay slur yesterday was un-American and indefensible," Edwards said in a posting on his Web site, www.johnedwards.com.

"In America, we strive for equality and embrace diversity. The kind of hateful language she used has no place in political debate or our society at large.

"I believe it is our moral responsibility to speak out against that kind of bigotry and prejudice every time we encounter it."

Edwards' campaign posted the video on their Web site, and asked readers to help them "raise $100,000 in 'Coulter Cash' this week to keep this campaign charging ahead and fight back against the politics of bigotry."

28. She added, "I don't know why all gays aren't Republican.......

........During a question-and-answer session, Coulter referred back to the issue of gays by alluding to the bid for the Republican presidential nomination being made by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

"I do want to point out one thing that has been driving me crazy with the media -- how they keep describing Mitt Romney's position as being pro-gays, and that's going to upset the right wingers," she said. "Well, you know, screw you! I'm not anti-gay. We're against gay marriage. I don't want gays to be discriminated against."

She added, "I don't know why all gays aren't Republican. I think we have the pro-gay positions, which is anti-crime and for tax cuts. Gays make a lot of money and they're victims of crime. No, they are! They should be with us."

33. It boggles the mind that there is even one gay Repub left in the country.
It used to be that the Republican Party stood for certain principles that a decent person could espouse in good conscience, but I think those days are long gone. A lot of straight white people who are reflexively Republican simply haven't awakened to the fact that their party has left them.

But gays?! The Republican Party endorses policies and politicians who openly hate gays, despise them, ridicule them and want to legally oppress them.

I don't get it -- are the Log Cabin Republicans just waiting for a pogrom before they will admit this? Are they all as privileged as Mary Cheney (somehow I doubt that) -- living in such a bubble that they think all this ugliness somehow doesn't apply to them personally? Do they feel special and protected by their powerful connections?

How can this s**t not drive every last gay Repub out of the party?

I just can't wrap my mind around this.

Hekate

Edited on Sun Mar-04-07 11:43 PM by RamboLiberal
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/04/eveningnews/main2534792.shtml

Even by the standards of sharp-tongued commentator Ann Coulter, this was a stunner.

"I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word "faggot."

The slur against gay people earned Coulter cheers in a young, standing-room only crow at Friday's American Conservative Union meeting.

As CBS News correspondent Joie Chen reports, Coulter insists it was a joke about the Democratic hopeful.

You know, the one that was passed after Janet Jackson showed her boob on TV? If so, what's to stop people from filing complaints? The fine for anyone who gets busted is like $250,000. If enough complaints are filed against her offensive comments, then the media will be afraid to air anything by her/him and she/he's history. She/He would be too much of a liability for even Faux.
