The leaders of automakers General Motors, Ford, Toyota and Chrysler plan to testify before a House panel examining climate change and energy security, officials said Thursday. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said the auto industry executives would meet with lawmakers on March 14 to discuss global warming, the Bush administration's proposal on revamping gas mileage requirements and other energy issues.
Auto industry officials said the committee will hear from Rick Wagoner, General Motors Corp.'s chairman and chief executive, Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive Alan Mulally, Toyota Motor Corp.'s North American President Jim Press and Tom LaSorda, president and CEO of DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group.
Ron Gettelfinger, the president of the United Auto Workers union, is also expected to testify before the panel.
"We intend to conduct a thorough examination of the issues, and take action to promote energy independence and confront global warming in a way that keeps our economy strong," Dingell said in a statement.
"All sectors of the economy will be examined, and all policy options are on the table. The old way of examining these matters is no longer sufficient," he said.
