Government routinely misses energy deadlines

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government is years behind in implementing congressionally mandated energy efficiency standards. That's the conclusion of government auditors.

The Government Accountability Office reports that the federal government has missed all 34 deadlines set by Congress to require energy efficiency standards on everything from home appliances to power transformers.

Two-thirds of the deadlines have yet to be met, although many of them are more than a decade old. Some are expected to be up to 15 years late.

Because of the failures, the G-A-O says consumers and corporations will pay tens of billions of dollars more for energy than they would have if the deadlines had been met.
