North Dakota legislature votes to dump cohabitation law

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Cohabitation will apparently no longer be a sex crime in North Dakota.

The state legislature has passed a bill to strike the law, which put a man and woman living together outside of marriage in the same category as rape, incest, and adultery.

Census figures from 2000 show that 23-thousand people in North Dakota live in de facto relationships.

North Dakota is one of seven states that bar male-female cohabitation outside marriage. Florida, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia have similar laws.
