Uruguayan ex-colonel detained in Brazil

By RAUL GARCES
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay -- Coordinated international efforts led to the capture in Brazil of a retired Uruguayan colonel wanted in "dirty war" probes in both Argentina and Uruguay, officials said Tuesday.

Manuel Juan Cordero, 67, was detained Monday in Santana do Livramento, a town near the Uruguayan border where he was living.

Uruguay is seeking his extradition in connection with its investigation of the disappearance of a leftist dissident during its 1973-85 military dictatorship, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday.

It was unclear exactly why Argentina is seeking Cordero. Brazilian federal police spokesman Juliano Tabajara da Silva said it had to do with the killing of two Uruguayan politicians in Buenos Aires in 1976.

The Uruguay Interior Ministry said Argentina has an extradition request pending against Cordero in a case involving alleged coordinated repression of dissidents by former military dictatorships in South America.
