McCain Says Iraq Could End His Career

By CURT WOODWARD
Associated Press Writer

SEATTLE (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful John McCain said Friday that British Prime Minister Tony Blair has sacrificed his career to support the Iraq war, and the Arizona senator acknowledged that he could face the same fate.

McCain, a staunch defender of President Bush's new Iraq troop deployment strategy, said he worries that a cutback of British troops in southern Iraq announced by Blair this week could lead to stronger control by "Iranian-backed Shiite" forces. But he said Blair and the British deserve gratitude for their efforts.

"He has literally sacrificed his political career because of Iraq," McCain said during an appearance before the World Affairs Council and the City Club of Seattle. "That is a great testament to his political courage."

Asked later by a reporter if he was in danger of making the same sacrifice, McCain responded, "Sure."

7. Cheers !
Fall on your sword, Johnny. You're all washed up.

And it isn't sacrifice that cost Blair and you your reputations and careers, it is the ILLEGAL WAR YOU HELPED START THAT HAS BLOWN UP IN YOUR FACE. This isn't a noble yet unpopular cause, Johnny. This is a debacle we did NOT have to get into.

Fuck you, Johnny.

from the article:

After the speech, McCain was asked by an audience member if he was "sucking up to the religious right." He drew laughs by responding: "What's wrong with sucking up to everybody?"

21. What, no recommendations!
MoDo is featuring this article in her column tomorrow!

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/24/washington/24cong.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

He was asked about Britain’s decision to withdraw 1,600 troops from Iraq. “Tony Blair, the prime minister, has shown great political courage,” Mr. McCain said. “He has literally sacrificed his political career because of Iraq, my friends,” because he thought “it was the right thing to do.”

He said he worried that Iranian-backed Shiites were taking more and more control of southern Iraq. (That was probably because the Brits kept peace in southern Iraq all along by giving Iranian-backed Shiites more and more control.) And he noted that the British are sending more troops to Afghanistan, “which is very necessary because we’re going to have a very hot spring in Afghanistan.”

But then he got back to Tony Blair sacrificing his political career, and it was clear that he was also talking about himself. When a reporter later asked him if Iraq might consume his candidacy, he replied evenly: “Sure.”

I asked him if he got discouraged when he reads stories like the one in The Wall Street Journal yesterday about Ahmad Chalabi, the man who helped goad and trick the U.S. into war, who got “a position inside the Iraqi government that could help determine whether the Bush administration’s new push to secure Baghdad succeeds.”

Or the New York Times article yesterday about a couple of Iraqi policemen who joined American forces on searches in Baghdad, but then turned quisling, running ahead to warn residents to hide their weapons and other incriminating evidence.

He nodded. “I think one of the big question marks is how the Maliki government will step up to the plate,” he said.

22. With McCain probably out...Giuliani might win...horrors!
When he was mayor of NYC he was a real HARD ASS and he and his police were really tough and unfair to Blacks and the homeless. I can just imagine what kind of police state and country we would have under his presidency...especially after 9/11. We think bush* is bad...wait till we have a Giuliani administration! We'll be pining for the good old days of bush/Cheney. :scared:

Nobody held a gun to his head and forced him to promote bush OR his war. He was HARDLY a helpless POW here.

Mr. mccain, you have brought this on deliberately. It was your choice. You jumped in, head first, and with your eyes wide open. You CHOSE to show repeated and consistent poor judgment in your nauseating, ongoing, and incomprehensible support for bush and his war. YOU made this bed. In fact, we - and many more than we - begged, pleaded, called, emailed, petitioned, faxed, wrote letters, lobbied, protested, agitated, nagged, coaxed, did EVERYTHING we could to help you see the truth, and come around. We did EVERYTHING to help you pull the wool away from your eyes. You, on the other hand, make sure to keep gluing it securely in place. If your career is torpedoed by your support of bush and his war, in spite of EVERYTHING we have ALL known about it for some time now, in spite of ALL the evidence, the facts, and the incontrovertible, pure, unspun truth, it's YOU WHO DID IT. You, like tony blair, have nobody else to blame but yourself.

They are making a fortune. They will have more political power after they leave office than while they are in it because of all that money. Crooks, that's what they are (sorry, I'm having a bad day).

32. Why is that you dumb shit?
Why would Iraq end your career? Are you suggesting the great majority want the US out of Iraq while you persist in wanting the killing to continue? When you make a statement such as ;
"He has literally sacrificed his political career because of Iraq," you show your callousness. Nothing about all the lives sacrificed only a career being taken from one for obvious reasons which your tiny brain can't seem to grasp..You are history and it ain't all because of Iraq...You are a sycophant that refuses to listen to those that elected you.. Ba Bye...

42. Career is already DEAD
It died when you were groping shrub and eating cake while Katrina was drowning thousands. It was over when you put on your knee pads to visit Bob Jones. And it is still over after you keep calling for more troops into the meat grinder that is Iraq. Asshole.
