White House opposes war authority limits

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent 47 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The White House said Friday it would oppose any attempt by Senate Democrats to revoke the 2002 congressional resolution authorizing the war in
Iraq and to restrict U.S. troops to a limited mission as they prepared to withdraw.

The Bush administration argued that changes in the resolution were unnecessary even though it was drafted in the days when
Saddam Hussein was in power and there was an assumption — later proved false — that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. The White House said Democrats were in a state of confusion about Iraq.

"There's a lot of ... shifting sands in the Democrats' position right now," deputy press secretary Tony Fratto said. "It's hard to say exactly what their position is."

Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record), D-Nev., said of the White House, "They can spin all they want, but the fact is that
President Bush is ignoring a bipartisan majority of Congress, his own military commanders and the American public in escalating the war.

2. This is news?
I know it is, I'm just joshing.
Of course it would really be news if the White House was in favor of war authority limits, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

3. If Congress can enact something, Congress can revoke it, too
And the only "shifting" going on among the Democrats, Mr. Fratto, is whether to withdraw the troops and then begin the impeachment hearings, or just withdraw the troops. It all depends on how reasonable we're all willing to be, capisce?

6. Did Bush sign that resolution or was that something that Congress
can do without it going to the Oval Office?
