US Democrats seek to gut Bush's Iraq war powers

by Stephen Collinson 39 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Senate Democrats are launching a bid to handcuff
President George W. Bush's power to wage war in
Iraq, lining up a possible constitutional showdown in their latest bid to bring troops home.

Key senators aim to repeal the 2002 congressional authorization permitting Bush to go to war, as they challenge his last-ditch surge of 21,500 troops into Iraq, a congressional source said Friday on condition of anonymity.

The move was still being finalized Friday but could be introduced as early as next week, and would seek to limit the US mission in Iraq to battling terrorists, guarding Iraq's borders and training Iraqi troops, the source said.

Political news website Politico.com also reported the legislation would call for a pullout of US combat troops from Iraq by March 2008 -- in line with the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group bipartisan commission last year.

If this is the same effort mentioned by the WaPo, yes, Bush could veto it. However, he'd also have to veto the Homeland Security bill it's attached to.

I'd expect a signing statement, instead.

4. War powers is the heart and soul of Bush's image of the President
he'd sacrifice pretty much everything for preserving it for his "place in history". A little Homeland Security bill is nothing to him compared to that IMHO.
