The Hill: McConnell: Democrats are divided over Iraq and won't be able to stop White House strategy
McConnell: Democrats are divided over Iraq
By Klaus Marre

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Thursday that Democrats are split over Iraq and will not be able to stop the White House's Iraq strategy.

"The Democrats are divided among themselves," McConnell said in an interview with Fox News. "You've not seen it yet because they've tried to put forward only one proposal. But they're divided among themselves over the appropriateness of cutting off funds for the troops."

Asked whether Democrats could stop the war in Iraq through a restriction in funding, McConnell said: "They could do it if they had the votes and they had the presidential signature. I don't think they're going to have either."

But McConnell also indicated that his patience with regard to Iraq wasn't endless. While he has strongly supported President Bush's "surge" plan, he told Fox that the Iraqis "need to get it right this time."

McConnell's Republicans have twice succeeded this month in stopping the Democrats from moving to a vote on a non-binding resolution opposing the surge. But the Democrats gained more votes on the second try. The first cloture vote Feb. 5 was 49-47, while the second cloture vote Feb. 17 got the support of 56 senators. That is only four shy of the required majority....

1. WHY?
Why are they divided? Can't they count? Who's in control of both Houses of Congress? What issue got them elected?

Why are the Democratic leaders such schmucks and wimps?

13. Repuke definition: divided
"divided" means that Joe Lieberman is opposed to every one of the Democrats.

That's what a repuke means when he or she says that the Dems are divided.

14. He's right. But he's trying to goad us.
THE REPUBLICANS WANT TO GOAD US INTO DEFUNDING.

Defunding Iraq would mean the Dems would be forever blamed for losing Iraq.

They are desperately looking for a political way out of their own disaster. They want to blame the Iraq failure on us.

We must do absolutely nothing to disturb history's solid, unequivocal verdict that Bush and the Neocons and the Right Wing are the ones to blame for this disaster.

So if being divided means we can't vote to defund, then that's good.

The right wing and the American people have to learn once and for all that invading and occupying another country in a war of choice will result in nothing but abject failure.

I thought 55,000 of us dying in Nam would drill this lesson into the American psyche, but apparently more blood must be spilled before we, as a nation, get the point!

27. Bush would never sign it anyway.
So some Dems might choose to not vote to de-fund for any number of reasons; trading this vote for something more meaningful; if they view their district opinion to reflect that vote; or maybe they just would disagree with the details of the bill- timing, implementation, whatever.

Nevertheless, I suppose there would be a whole new crop of Dems that some DUers will never be able to vote for again.

17. United we stand, but divided we fall, and fall and fall and fall and fall.
It doesn't matter what he says.

The people vote them in to do one thing, and they cannot do it.

25. And Mitch is such a rep of the people of Ky. A majority of Kentuckians
polled want Mitch to oppose the surge. Maybe we can finally get rid of him in '08. No such luck, I am afraid. But his current arrogant stand does not sit well in Kentucky.
