Evangelist tells students: Shun Muslims
RALEIGH - A national Muslim advocacy group has rebuked the Wake County Public School system for allowing a Christian evangelist to speak at Enloe High School and distribute pamphlets denouncing Islam.

The Council on American Islamic Relations said the school system will have created a "discriminatory, hostile learning environment," violating federal civil rights law, if it does not investigate the incident and apologize to students.

The complaint stems from a guest appearance last week in several classes by Kamil Solomon, a Raleigh-based Christian evangelist, who urged students to shun Muslims.

"When you bring in somebody to distribute hate-filled literature without an opportunity for rebuttal, you have a disturbing situation," said Ibrahim Hooper, communications director for the national council, known as CAIR. "These students are obliged to be in the classroom and listen to this speaker who is presented as an authority figure by the teacher."

.......

Solomon's appearance Friday in teacher Robert Escamilla's social studies classes at Enloe, a magnet school for gifted and talented students, shocked many who took the pamphlets home and showed them to their parents, students said. One pamphlet, comparing Jesus with Muhammad, says the Muslim prophet "enslaved people, abused women and taught Muslims to terrorize non-Muslims and force them into Islam."

"He basically told us Muslims were bad and we should convert to Christianity," said Alyssa Kaszycki, 14, of Cary, who heard Solomon during a freshman seminar class. "He told all the girls we should never marry a Muslim man because they would take away our freedom and beat us."

44. I noticed that and thought he might be a convert
A person raised Muslim who converts to Christianity might be more rabid than a born and raised fundie, who wouldn't be all that likely to say that, come to think of it, or use the word "shun."

18. That's where these sorts are the most frightened
Because they are no longer the only game in town, they're even more scared than if they were in a region where all the sheeple belonged to their faith. Therefore, they have to pull out all the stops to try to get the foreigners, religiously and otherwise, to leave and to convince their own sheeple not to congregate with them or to consider them human. If the sheeple see that the Muslim family next door is just like theirs, the sheeple might invite them over for a holiday barbecue and that might lead to a greater sense of love and understanding, rather than irrational hatred.

I've seen this play out in my home county, where an influx of tech companies and federal agencies have increased the presence of "other" there. In response, the local paper has in recent years started to publish a Saturday "Faith" section that directly states that the purpose of the material printed in it is "to proclaim the supremacy of our Lord Jesus Christ."

13. You know, I heard an interesting theory once from some crazy-ass media
outlet, I can't remember if it was the radio or the internet, but it was that humans on this planet are nothing more than DNA "containers" for an alien race that placed us here thousands of years ago...kinda like a DNA farm for experimentation. They instilled the idea of religion in our race so we wouldn't end up killing each other and negating their "investment".

What a f-up that was, hasn't more people have been killed in the name of religion than any other reason?

I make it a point to watch any and all Moyers productions I find! I love his strong yet quiet and gentle style. It feels to me that he is a very spiritual person and is genuinely caring of the human race. Not to mention he is brilliant and has a unique perspective given he has been part of the old school newscaster roster.

22. what BS
"He basically told us Muslims were bad and we should convert to Christianity," said Alyssa Kaszycki, 14, of Cary, who heard Solomon during a freshman seminar class. "He told all the girls we should never marry a Muslim man because they would take away our freedom and beat us."

and now a word from Reality(tm):

Gee, Mom married a Muslim, and he has never beaten her...if he even thought about it she would have beaned him with a frying pan. Take away her freedom, harummmph. Not even. He knows better than to try. Step-Father is a nice guy, except when he tries to pull the "patriarchal" number...then I just ignore him.

As to her converting to anything, forget it. She is a skeptic.

33. The fundamentalists turn good religions into hate filled violent
groups. Look at the extreme part of the Southern Baptists; they would buy the Brooklyn bridge if their preacher told them to do it. They can not think for themselves due to conditioning and environment. All exteme religions are dangerous. All of them.

will turn its main function to self preservation after a fairly short time span. Fundamentalism is self preservation at any cost, basically a cancer.

35. Somebody told me once that Christianity was a religion of peace, too.
then I learned about the Crusades, and the witch hunts of the Middle Ages, and how the church collaborated with the Nazis, and how the Dominionists actively seek to kill or enslave all non-fundamentalist-Christians.

I guess I'm a little skeptical.

37. as a student at enloe high school...
heyy!!!! im a juniour at enloe high school, and my drivers ed teacher (one of the best teachers in the WORLD) was mr escamilla. i ADMIRE him, especially for his fearlessness in talking of religion in school. this was a complete incident, and he could not possibly have known what the man was going to say, and even so, since when have classes not been taught just one side of the spectrum? we're given us history textbooks depicting the united states as an angel nation, whereas a textbook in, say, britain or japan most definitely shows us as the overpowering energy-hogging bullies that we seem. this is just another example; we're told all our lives how to percieve other cultures, and this man brought it to a WHOLE different light. therefore, mr escamilla should not be put to blame (hes currently on suspension), but the man, instead. a school setting is NOT appropriate for what he told us, and it hurt countless muslim students who heard his harmful words.

...just thought id stick up for mr esco :-D

43. My school would have invited a muslim speaker the next day to counter the arguments
Our rules said that all controversial issues must have both sides presented. In my government class, one day we had the local leader of the Moral Majority and the next day, a guy from the ACLU. In my sociology class, one day we had a speaker from Right To Life and the next day we had one from Planned Parenthood. This is how it should be with high school kids.
