Five US troops die in Iraq raids

Five US soldiers have been killed in two attacks in Iraq on a day that violence claimed more than 25 lives across the country.

The violence comes despite an intensified security operation in the capital, Baghdad, and across Iraq.

Twelve people, including five police officers, died in a car bomb attack near Ramadi in western Anbar province.

..................

Three US soldiers on patrol were killed and two wounded by an "improvised explosive device" south-west of Baghdad on Monday, the US military said.

Two more US soldiers were killed and 17 others were wounded in a suicide attack on a "combat outpost" north of Baghdad.

5. The great Patreus at work.
Everyone out of the fortified bases and into these outposts. He wrote the book on counter-insurgency warfare, and since he is such a braniac the troops get to play out his theories in TRW.

I'm a mere amateur at best when it comes to strategy and tactics, but this particular tactic looks to me like it is going to a) kill a lot more of our troops; b) make life increasingly miserable for both those posted to these outposts and the unfortunate Iraqis who have to live near them. I'm wondering, do our soldiers sent out to live with the people even speak their language?

What a massive disaster this is going to be.

8. In the game of Go, they'd be dead stones
They are too few and they are too isolated.

Baghdad has a population of about 5,000,000. The ratio of population to soldiers for a successful counter-insurgency operation should be 50 to 1 or less. We certainly do not have more than 100,000 soldiers in Baghdad.

By spreading the troops out into these outposts, they are harder to support and are out of touch with each other.
