Insurgents slaughter 40 Iraqis in day of bombs

by Salam Faraj 1 hour, 46 minutes ago

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Bombs have detonated across central
Iraq, adding 40 more bloodied corpses to the grim toll of Iraqi dead as rebel groups mount a savage challenge to the latest US and Iraqi security plan.

The attacks will in the main be blamed on Sunni insurgents and appear to have been timed to embarrass US and Iraqi commanders as they deploy tens of thousands of troops to try to quell Baghdad's vicious sectarian war.

Two American soldiers were also killed and 17 wounded in what the US military dubbed a "coordinated attack on a coalition force combat outpost" in Tarmiyah, some 30 kilometres (20 miles) north of the capital.

"Insurgents initiated the attack on the outpost with a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonation," a US statement said. "The attack site has been secured and wounded soldiers have been evacuated."

Six more US troops die in Iraq
BAGHDAD (AFP) - A suicide bomber has attacked a US outpost north of Baghdad, detonating an explosives-laden vehicle that killed two American soldiers and wounded 17 more.

Separately, the military announced the deaths "in combat operations" of three marines and a soldier over three days in the western province of Anbar.

An Iraqi security official told AFP Monday's attack was carried out against an American base in Tarmiyah, 30 kilometres (19 miles) north of the capital.

"Insurgents initiated the attack on the outpost with a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonation," a US military statement said Monday. "The attack site has been secured and wounded soldiers have been evacuated."

The deaths brought the number of US servicemen and women to have died in the Iraqi campaign since the March 2003 invasion to 3,135, according to an AFP tally based on Pentagon figures.

4. and then there is this: U.S. Marine killed in Anbar fighting; 3 soldiers killed on patrol
BAGHDAD (CNN) -- A U.S. Marine assigned to Multi-National Force-West was killed Monday during fighting in Iraq's Anbar province, according to a U.S. military news release.

The Marine is the fifth American service member attached to Multi-National Force-West to die in Anbar fighting since Friday.

Also Monday, three soldiers were killed and two were wounded by a roadside bomb that struck their patrol southwest of Baghdad, the military said.

Earlier on Monday, the military announced that a soldier and a Marine assigned to the same force also died in Sunday fighting in Anbar, west of Baghdad. It was not clear if they were killed in the same incident. Two other Marines attached to the unit died in Anbar combat, one on Friday and one on Saturday. (Posted 3:04 p.m.)

5. 17 GIs wounded by the shrapnel from a car bomb is not a pretty sight
These soldiers have been scarred for life.

Looks like the predictions about the surge are coming true.

2. Change in Insurgent Tactics

This is going to be the first of many US combat outposts to be hit.

It makes perfect sense; Attacking the outposts why the majority of the troops are in the field.

Why stay in the targeted areas, just move, and set back up later. Classic guerrilla war tactics.
