Lieberman blasts Dean as ‘Dr. No’
<snip>

Trying to capitalize on what he views as an opportune moment for his campaign, Joseph Lieberman yesterday ripped Presidential rival Howard Dean as a “backward Democrat” who will weaken the nation’s defense, raise middle-class taxes and start a trade war costing millions of American jobs.

Lieberman’s strongest attack so far on the Democratic front-runner drew in part from an old James Bond film.

“Dr. Dean,” he said, “has become Dr. No.”

2. I just heard Lieberman tell a NH audience
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 05:59 AM by Skidmore
he wanted to take "Bill Clinton's surplus" and use it to help the poor and preserve the environment. How's that nasally sucker planning to do that when he's so gung-ho about prosecuting Bush's war? Hey, Joe, haven't you heard the surplus has been spent many times over? He also intoned that he will value the contributions of people of faith while "respecting the boundaries of church and state." Methinks Joe speaks out of both sides of his mouth. The more I hear him the less I respect that smarmy snakeoil salesman.

However, he is now defending them and attacking other candidates that want to repeal them. Which is better? Seems a bit two-faced to me to attack someone for wanting to repeal a tax cut that you yourself didn't vote for in the first place.

60. Granted, he did. However . . .
However, there is still no surplus left to help poor people, protect the environment or prosecute a series of colonial wars.

In spite of Lieberman's best efforts, for which we should give him credit, Bush gave it away.

And Lieberman knows it. So, there's no sense for him talking about what he's going to do with it.

i saw the debacle -- lieberman is grossing me out now more than ever.
he sounds falwell-esque in his attack on dean.
if kucinich was the front runner -- would liebermans message be different -- personally i doubt it.
all the candidates must focus on bushco and their own plans for the country.
attacking each other does not make democrats look like winners.

You would see the entire DLC faction closing ranks and forming the Democrats for Bush.

The Left is getting the message. We might see a credible Green challenge if the Democrats nominate a prowar candidate.

13. echoes of Democrats for Nixon
My fear is that too many Dems tacticly accept one specific right-wing assumption about preventive war: capturing Saddam Hussein justifies invading another country whenever our power brokers feel like it. This fear is based upon a sudden shift in the discourse here in which increasingly the argument is made that only a pro-war candidate will do.

Make a mental note of this for the next time that lefties are accused of intransigence and extremism.

I agree with you that in that scenario the Greens will get increased attention from the Democratic left. I think a credible challenge at the national level is still a long way off, although DLC Dems are doing their best to hasten the moment.

15. Everyday marks a new low
Blindly (?) making still more talking points for the cons. For sure, when he finally drops out in total failure, he will live on in well funded Shrub ads that outspend his entire campaign yet draw on his wealth of vindictive capital.

Plus he's turned into the press darling--they love him. Sound bite every 30 minutes since Saddam. Perception of equal time by showing nearly two republicans. I can't stand him. I used to give him a glimmer of a benefit of a doubt. Gone! Now he just embodies everything that is wrong just with "centrist" (those are really big quotes) just like whistleass embodies the wrongs since 2000.

I was pissed before the campaign with his abdication of authority, the repub party line, the whole DHS thing. Arrg! Why can’t we write in and divorce him?

I hereby launch a loogie in his direction.

19. Lieberman has to know he can't win
So why doesn't he just go home already? There's more to that question than meets the eye. Think back to Lieberman's "debate" with Dick Cheney in 2000. Think back to his deciding for the Gore campaign -- all on his own -- to announce on Meet the Press that "Sure, we will count the illegal overseas absentee ballots".

Lieberman may have a decently liberal voting record on most issues but he stood in the way of accounting reforms which may have prevented fiascos like Enron and he's bankrolled by the insurance industry.

So I ask again, why doesn't Joe just go home?

I was so proud of Gore for choosing the first Jewish American to be on a major party ticket. I thought it was damn time and I think Joe helped him in some states. A lot of other crap happened to ruin the election.
But now, remembering the studpid things Lieberman did during the campaign, his flacid performance against cheney in the debate and his support of countin illegal military votes... to say nothing of his backstabbing statements about Gore loosing because he was too populist...... Joe can go to hell.

I'm so completely sick of all of them chewing on Dean's (and each others) legs like rabid dogs. Don't they realize that the more they beat each other up, the more likely it is that people who WOULD have voted democratic are just going to give up and stay home? More and more I hear people who once cared about one or more of the candidates now saying they're all alike and they've lost enthusiasm for the election. Thanks to Gephardt, Lieberman and Kerry's campaigns for playing such dirty pool. Those of us who hoped to defeat bush are rapidly losing what little hope we had thanks to this kind of politics.

63. I am Not George Bush or Howard Dean
He then blasted Dean’s plan to repeal all of Bush’s tax cuts.

“Remember the increase in the child tax credit? Under Howard Dean, it’s gone. The new 10 percent bracket? Gone. The marriage penalty? Back in place under Dean.

“The difference between Howard Dean’s tax hikes and my tax cuts adds up to $2,700 a year left in the pockets of the average New Hampshire family,” Lieberman said. He said Dean would hurt trade and the U.S. economy by “refusing to trade with any country unless they meet unrealistically high standards.” He said such a policy “would start a trade war.”

And, in a clear appeal to moderate voters, particularly independents, Lieberman said, “I am not George Bush or Howard Dean.”

I think he's a lot closer to Bushie than Dean. Lieberman needs to go.
