Gingrich might enter '08 race in September, calls long campaigns 'stupid'

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Georgia, said Friday he would strongly consider a late entry into the 2008 presidential race if no other Republican candidate is catching the "right momentum."

"Callista and I and our family will stop and look and see what's the world at the end of September," Gingrich said during a forum at the National Press Club. "If there isn't somebody who has the right ideas and the right solutions and building the right momentum, we'll consider running."

...

"I think the current process of spending an entire year running in order to spend an entire year running in order to get sworn in in January of 2009 is stupid," he said.

"The idea of spending all of this year criss-crossing to raise money, to pay off the consultants, to do the focus groups, to memorize the 40-second answer to "and what would you do about Medicare?" -- I just think it's a terrible way to spend your time," Gingrich added.

6. His entry will boost the spouses/declared candidates average.
McCain = 2
Guiliani = 3
Romney = 1
Newt = 3

Ave before Newt = 2
Ave after Newt = 2.25

8. Oh god, not this dipshit again
Hey Newt, here's a freebie.

The reason campaigning has started so early is because the nominee will be selected by Feb of next year, because of the race between states to have earlier primaries to have more of a stake or say in the primary.

So, you dumb ass, you need to already be running to lock up key endorsements and start raising money, or you are gonna have to raise all of your primary cash during the Holiday Season after everyone else has already come by, and will have only 4 months before your first primary. Otherwise, you will be ....well, still irrelevant.

This douche bag has NO risk of winning. He is simply trying to create a constituency to then shop to the nominee for some cush new job.

Hey Newt, how's your wife doin?

22. I would like to add to that.
I agree. Either he is delusion or he wants/needs a cush job.

By waiting until late in the game, he doesn't have to deal with how campaign dirty politics are done now days. His personal life isn't safe, anything and everything 'goes.' That sort of thing. HE hasn't had to deal with it.

The repuglicans still remember the 'good ole days' when Newt was top dog attacking Clinton. But they have not had 'in your face' reminders of his negatives. By delaying, they are not likely to be 'reminded' of those negatives. They will be focusing on the other canidates running. And those canidates will be attacking each other.

Which would make him seem like a 'real' contintender to the race. And might make a republican stupided enough to at least try to offer newt the VP slot, if he will drop his campaign and join him. In the VP slot, he will not be as 'hit' as the top dog spot.

I would have said that his chance of getting the spot to be "slim and none". But I was supprised that JR was picked over McCain. I figured they were not stupid enough to pick JR. <shurg>

9. I'll ask here (I've asked in several other threads): What is the deadline for filing?
With the feelers that President GORE might file in September, now this, where are the rules for filing, who wrote them, what ARE THEY?

I'm sure the MediaPukkkes are doing it on purpose to make us sick of our Dem candidates long before the election. Meanwhile, their people don't even announce!

25. "Callista and I and our family"... When Newt speaks of his "family"...
one has to review a roladex to figure out which family he speaks of.

As someone pointed out, between John McCain, Rudy and Newt there are eight divorces. Wow!

27. Zowie; love those Repub family values. Yet somehow the Clintons are still married to each other...
Wonder how they do that?

Like the rest of DU, I don't mind if politicians divorce and remarry. It's what the rest of America does, after all. It's the Republican hypocrisy, the sanctimonious preaching, that grates.

As for Newt -- welcome to the fun. By all means split up your party. Run as an Independent, why don't you? hehe

Hekate
