Biden looks to revoke Bush's Iraq authority

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Presidential candidate and Delaware Sen. Joe Biden said Thursday he is working on legislation to "repeal" the 2003 congressional authority that allowed President Bush to take military action against Iraq.

"We gave the president that power to destroy Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and, if necessary, to depose Saddam Hussein," Biden said in prepared remarks of speech to the Brookings institution, a Washington think-tank. "The WMD were not there. Saddam Hussein is no longer there. The 2002 authorization is no longer relevant to the situation in Iraq."

Biden said he would work to offer new legislation that redefines the U.S. mission in Iraq, making it much "narrower."

"Congress should make clear what the mission of our troops is: to responsibly draw down, while continuing to combat terrorists, train Iraqis and respond to emergencies," Biden said. "We should make equally clear what their mission is not: to stay in Iraq indefinitely and get mired in a savage civil war."

2. so, is the inclusion of "presidential candidate" supposed to subliminally imply
its only being done for political gain?

do republican presidential candidates get thusly identified when they bring forth legislation?

just curious.

9. You know the answer. That's how corpmedia plays any important measure.
All Dem moves are political and all Republican moves are 'true believers'.....media sez so.

3. Good plan
I don't care about Biden's motivations in this case. If he can get this ball rolling, good for him and good for all of us. He still doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning the presidency.

4. Pointing out that the IWR gave Bush the go ahead only if WMD were found
Good for you Joe. Many people- including many here - seem to forget that.

1)We did just win the Congress back.
2)It's better now than never.

10. I've been saying this forever
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=41483

After hearing some legal refinement I'd only stress further that the authorization was to use force only in the absense of compliance with UN sanctions.

They were in compliance.

Again. Game over.

(not that I consider war to ever be a game. but we've been dicked around with long enough-wars are simply no longer winnable in this still new millennium)

11. Joe Biden is the Dem's answer to Arlen Specter
All bark, no bite. A whore through and through who says all the right things (well, most of the time) and somehow manages to cultivate an image as a straight shooter who isn't afraid to take on the status quo.

Both do nothing when the chips are down, and both lead by looking over their shoulder to stay 'in the lead'. Or, as my grandfather would say, 'they just have wetter fingers'.

Both frustrate the SHIT out of me.

How's that presidential run goin, Joe? You articulated a platform yet? (snicker)

DLC douche bag. Hope he proves me wrong.

15. Please, Joe, get the troops out. The Iraqis have suffered so much
and so have these brave men who have time and again been sent to defy death for lies and greed and of course OIL.

16. A previous Congress refused to repeal the Tonkin Gulf Resolution
even though it was known at the time that the country had been lied to regarding the incident which led to the resolution being passed by Congress.

I pray and hope that Joe Biden is more successful in this endeavor!

17. I see a lot of chopping but no wood chips flying.
This looks like a publicity stunt that has no chance of success.

TOTAL NUMBER OF SOLDIERS PERMANENTLY REDEPLOYED FROM IRAQ = 0.
