Tim Hardaway: 'I Hate Gay People'
http://cbs4.com/local/local_story_045205258.html

(CBS4) MIAMI Former Miami Heat superstar Tim Hardaway told a local sports radio show that he "hates gay people."

Hardaway made the comments while he was being interviewed by Dan Le Batard on 790 the Ticket Wednesday afternoon.

The five time All Star was asked how he would deal with a gay teammate.

"First of all I wouldn't want him on my team," said Hardaway. "Second of all, if he was on my team I would really distance myself from him because I don't think that's right and I don't think he should be in the locker room when we're in the locker room."...

Shaq Helps Stop Gay-Basher
Miami Heat basketball star Shaquille O'Neal is one of the many celebrities now standing up against gay-bashing and homophobia. He witnessed a gay-bashing incident while driving in Miami. Instead of turning a blind eye to the homophobic slurs, the 7-foot-1 giant chased down the assailant and flagged an officer. The 18 year old was later arrested on charges of aggravated assault and assault with a deadly weapon for throwing a bottle at a gay couple. The victims were not seriously injured

21. Construction of masculinity
Edited on Thu Feb-15-07 01:15 AM by Katzenkavalier
In many places, Latin America being one, the cultural construction of masculinity involves the rejection of anything that "challenges" it (anything that is outside of the patriarchal definition of masculinity), including homosexuality. It is expected for men to reinforce their own heterosexuality/masculinity by embracing homophobia.

I've noticed many Americans, including a very high number of African-Americans, have the same problem.

So, no: I don't necessarily think this man is a self-hating homosexual, although he could be. I think he probably is an insecure heterosexual, in the sense that he is afraid of anything that he thinks challenges or diminishes his perception of his own "masculinity".

wow... wanna round em all up and put em in gas chambers Timmy??? I hope some very close people to him out themselves to him and tell him how sad his thoughts are, and how he makes people react badly back towards everything he is by being a bigoted pig.

sigh... I wish some huge ball players would stand up against his comments in a post game interview and say that's sick what he said about gay people needing to not be in the world.

25. No Excuse in 2007

While it is true that many societies in African and in South American Latin countries exhibit a cultural hyper-masculinity in a patriarchal context - this can be traced to the ideals and social norms imposed upon these cultures by those that colonized these territories. Some African tribes actually incorporated rites of passage that included homosexual practices.

The same can be said of North and South American Native Indian tribes; prior to the arrival of the white man there was no concept of homophobia and in many cases those that we today recognize as gay or homosexual were actually revered and held in high esteem within their tribal culture. Many North American tribes referred to them as "Two spirit people" and were often appointed as tribal shaman. But this came to end once these tribes were taught homophobia by their conquerers.

Hate and bigotry are learned behavior and in our own 21st century American culture it continues to be perpetuated in the name of religion. It is despicable that religion is used to denigrate homosexuals.

But if this man bases his hatred of homosexuals upon his own religious beliefs (or as some have suggested his own inner homophobia) he should be reminded that it was not to long ago that the same people who use religion as the context and basis for bigotry against homosexuals today used the same methodology to justify enslaving and denying African-Americans' their own Civil Rights.

There is no excuse for such bigoted ignorance.

None.

Edited on Thu Feb-15-07 10:14 AM by TOJ
which is too bad since in my generation it was racism that the hate-mongers used to galvanize their "base". 40 years ago "I hate blacks" was perfectly PC among "conservatives". Who will they hate next, and will gays take part in the bashing?

40. Is he a fundie?
Or maybe he has been approached too many times and had bad experiences. It's not something even the most wild-eyed freeper would say. They would do it indirectly, whining about "PC."

I would imagine (I'm sure I'll be corrected if wrong) that gaydar does not always work and that a true straight guy can just politely decline, saying he is straight, as opposed to a repressed gay claiming to be straight reacting more violently.

Does he think he's NEVER played with a gay teammate? Showered in the same area as a gay man? Pulled on his jockstrap right next to a gay man?

He's almost certainly played slaptickle in the locker room with a teammate who then went home and sucked some guy's cock.

54. Apologized to FOX?
I don't think that's where the apology needs to go.

Or that being regretful is nearly enough.

He needs to seriously apologize, and then promise to seek the serious psychological help he needs.

Imagine the uproar if those words had been directed at African Americans or Jews? I don't think people are nearly pissed off enough.

if others get killed by them or because of the incitement.

It's called responsibility. His statement of not wanting them in the world is pretty damning---

Will folks use the country is great excuse at the next funeral?

This isn't a free speech issue. It's a responsibility and humanity issue.

Hardaway is lacking in both based upon his statements.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=afp-basketnbagayamaechi&prov=afp&type=lgns

... A statement from NBA commissioner David Stern to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel said Hardaway has been removed from league-related appearances connected with Sunday's NBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas.

"It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours," Stern said.
