South Carolina black leaders back Clinton
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 06:33 PM by Placebo

Two key black political leaders in South Carolina who backed John Edwards in 2004 said Tuesday they are supporting Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

State Sens. Robert Ford and Darrell Jackson told The Associated Press they believe Clinton is the only Democrat who can win the presidency. Both said they had been courted by Illinois Sen. Barack Obama; Ford said Obama winning the primary would drag down the rest of the party.

"Then everybody else on the ballot is doomed," Ford said. "Every Democratic candidate running on that ticket would lose because he's black and he's at the top of the ticket — we'd lose the House, the Senate and the governors and everything."

"I'm a gambling man. I love Obama," Ford said. "But I'm not going to kill myself."

1. First they give Americans NO CREDIT for being able to vote for a black man.
Then they give Americans ALL THE CREDIT IN THE WORLD for being able to vote for a woman.

Mmmmmkay. Nothing like consistency.

3. They suffer from a certain back of the bus mentality
I am old enough to remember that there were Blacks opposed to civil rights activists because they were fearful of what would happen to them if people got all riled up.

5. So voting for Hillary is "back of the bus mentality?"
Are you sure they're not just "uppity?" /sarcasm

What a crock.

4. So does this settle the completely absurd "black enough" debate?
Or will we get many more months of this nonsense?

6. An African American columnist
compared black support for the Clintons to 1940s black movie audiences who rooted for Tarzan and Jane over the African natives.

How appropo.

14. An article about African American politicians not supporting
Obama is hardly proof that he is "black enough." If anything, it fuels the controversy.

To most whites, I don't think there is any doubt that Obama is "black". For most of us it doesn't matter whether his ancestors were slaves or he just got off the "boat" yesterday. In Obama's case his "blackness" is a positive reason to vote for him and, hopefully, usher in a new era for our country. For a relative few, I am sure that is a reason to vote for anyone but him.

Black S.C. leaders back Clinton over Edwards
They say Obama would ‘doom’ Democrats if he were to win nomination

13. Yes they do....
And I know a lady very very well who cannot stand Hillary and says she will never vote for her.

She likes Obama's support of libraries and education, along with his opinions on attempting to alleviate poverty.

She sees Hillary as nothing but power hungry. One thing that's often pointed out to me is HRC continuing to support Bill after his affairs. That is a sour note with many women I've talked to.

10. "Black leaders" ... all of them?
Story lead makes it sound like S.C. black leaders got together at a conference and voted to support Sen Clinton over any other candidates. But that isn't the case, unless there are only two black leaders in S.C.

Misleading headline at best.

11. “I’m a gambling man. I love Obama,” Ford said. “But I’m not going to kill myself.”
So this man is endorsing Clinton for two reasons

1. Because he thinks the fact that Obama is black will hurt the party
2. Because he wants to keep his job

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Hillary now is it?

12. Why are they called leaders?
Just because they hold political office doesn't mean their leaders.

I wouldn't want someone like Ford speaking for me if I lived in South Carolina.

“Then everybody else on the ballot is doomed,” Ford said. “Every Democratic candidate running on that ticket would lose because he’s black and he’s at the top of the ticket — we’d lose the House, the Senate and the governors and everything.”

I say it's time for the next generation to take over. We don't need anymore defeatist attitudes.

15. Whatever.
These same state senators couldn't get Democrats elected statewide in South Carolina so who cares.

They have as much clout as I do.

Plus it doesn't help that Bill called and sweet talked them into supporting Hillary. They can't think for themselves.

16. Oh so race matters?
and how about gender or family connections or last name?

Or maybe how about something really important like the candidate's platform and record?
