CAPITOL HILL Tough talk from the head of the House Homeland Security Committee. He's accusing the Bush administration of trying to protect America "on the cheap."
That's what Democrat Bennie Thompson told Bush's homeland security chief at a hearing today on Capitol Hill. Thompson is bluntly warning Michael Chertoff that "millions of lives are at stake."
Thompson is just one of the lawmakers complaining about proposed cuts in emergency communications and other programs.
Chertoff also got an earful from New York Republican Peter King, who's expressing his concern about delays in making an equipment upgrade. The new devices would let emergency agencies communicate with each other during disasters, which they can't do now.
