Ex-Va. GOP Chief Sentenced in Eavesdrop
RICHMOND, Va. -- The former head of the state Republican party was sentenced Tuesday to three years of probation and fined $5,000 for illegally intercepting a Democratic Party conference call on redistricting.
Edmund A. Matricardi III apologized before U.S. District Judge James R. Spencer for illegally accessing two calls among the state's top Democrats on March 22 and 25, 2002.
Matricardi, 35, said he did not know he was breaking the law when he joined the call using access codes provided by a disgruntled former Democratic Party operative, but he acknowledged that it was a mistake.
"I apologize to the governor and to the Democrats for listening to this call. I apologize to Virginians for this distraction. I apologize to my wife, to my little girls and to my parents," he said as his parents watched from the front row.

I pay some attention to the news and this is the first I've seen of it. He listened in on a 2 and a half hour conf call re: redistricting! Just amazing. Not a day in jail.
