Supporters Push Gore to Run in 2008

Supporters Push Gore to Run in 2008

CONCORD, N.H. -- Veterans of Al Gore's past are quietly assembling a campaign to draft the former vice president into the 2008 presidential race -- despite his repeated statements that he's not running.

His top policy adviser from his 2000 presidential campaign and other key supporters met Thursday in Boston to mull a potential Gore campaign. The participants and Gore's Nashville office both said Gore, who is in London, is not involved.

Elaine Kamarck, a veteran of the Clinton White House and Gore's policy guru in 2000, said the meeting was informal and shouldn't be taken as a sign there will be a Gore 2008 campaign.

Chris Mackin, a Boston consultant and Gore supporter, called it "an early stage conversation." But he added: "We're very serious about exploring this."

Gore's spokeswoman, Kalee Kreider, said the only campaign Gore is on right now is against global warming.

3. I haven't read the article at the link yet, but my very first thought is:
Why in the world would anyone want to see advisors and consultants from the 2000 campaign anywhere NEAR a 2008 Gore run?

If there's a danger that Gore would end up weighted down with the same class of DLC "professional consultants" that hamstrung him in 2000, I would hope that he continues to decline to run.

6. Agreed
Some new advisors may help. I have a much higher opinion of him now than I did in 2000 and would like to see him run. I see him as the best candidate and one who has been thoroughly vetted. In all honestly I wasn't impressed back then but I was far less impressed with the chimp and he did win once.

If I could offer some advice to Al Gore it would be to talk more succinctly, with speeches that are less lengthy, less senatorial, and more passionate. Something like Jim webb. He has gotten better.

40. Can't agree there, sorry.
Gore can have any consultants he wants and I will glady work as hard as humanly possible. The reason?

1. Gore won in 2000.

2. From an historical point of view he should have lost.

3. Therefore, he ran a pretty effective campaign, gaining on Bush after starting out way behind, again as predicted by history.

But the main reason I can't agree is because Gore is *clearly* the best candidate in this time of crisis. No one else except Obama, can even touch him because of the war. I think Obama would be a great VP candidate, but Gore is what the planet needs, straight up.

22. from the article
"He certainly has the right political climate. How many political candidates are being nominated for Nobel prizes and winning Oscars?" said Dylan Malone, co-founder of AlGore.org and organizer of a political action committee trying to draft Gore.

His work on global warming earned him a Nobel nomination and two Oscar nods for his documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth." He has re-branded himself on late-night television and has brought together a stable of grass-roots supporters.

In 2002, Gore asked Malone to stop a draft effort he had begun; Malone did. Malone started up again and, so far, Gore hasn't waved him off.

"The difference is dramatic. His time has come," Malone said. "We're raising tens of thousands of dollars fairly easily. Our mailing lists are growing so quickly we have to buy new computers."

Interesting decision making process you have.

I had not considered deciding on which candidate based on ear shape.

Perhaps you might be able to support your theory with facts and trend lines of various ear shapes vis a vis policy or career performance. How are the different ear shapes defined in your theory?

Are you older than eight?

Progressives who really know him and his ideas like him, but his repeated appearances on FAUX show the freeptards that he's intelligent, well-spoken, and not your typical Dem. It's a lot harder for them to trash him because they actually get to HEAR him and find it increasingly difficult to argue against him.

I wish he would also be himself in the next election, if he chooses to run. He comes off so bright and articulate when he is just Al. I watched An Inconvenient Truth On Demand a week or so ago. The whole movie i sat there and shook my head thinking, we could have this magnificent man as our leader if not for a crooked Supreme court ruling. The thought of how things would have went so much different with Al at the helm was so saddening.

And in my view, totally disrespecting what he wishes to do to take this most important challenge to humanity and turn it into a backburner issue now over their political BS by using his work and success on it for their own benefit. And their timing SUCKS. I just talked to someone today about this movie who stated they wouldn't see it because they think he is behind all of this.

I see this as just a group of people looking to get in on his action. And notice, NOT ONE WORD in this whole POS article about them actually joining to HELP with this crisis NOW. This is the EPITOME of the toxic political system Mr. Gore rightfully claims has ruined this process. And for them to even THINK he would take 50 MILLION dollars and waste it on a political soundbite campaign when he is totally devoted to solving this climate crisis and raising awareness only shows how truly disconnected they are from the man himself.

Well, they can post thousands of these speculative articles to try to make people believe all of his hard work is just a ruse to run in this system as if he is just like them and detract from what is really important, but I will not believe it and I will not give credence to ANY such tripe unless HE SPEAKS THE WORDS.

53. You certainly are found on every thread relating to whether Gore
is wanted to run or not, by people here, or other organizations. You are persistent, I give you that and you've made great points about Gore, as a person, and his intentions re: global climate change.

I have not however, seen (and I'd love for you to point to me if I have missed it) where you have been asked the question, "Why do you think he couldn't do MORE for this issue as POTUS?" and read a direct answer from you. You have responded by saying it would take "his" focus off his most devoted issue, but I beg to differ right there on that response. I ask in addition to the first question posed here on my post to you, Why do you underestimate his ability to delegate and quite frankly CHOOSE to WHOM he would delegate the actions/laws, in addition oversee the entire cause.. re: the environment??

Your argument short changes this man's ability to address the environment as well, if not better than he does now, ALONG with the other potentially life threatening situations that are going on right now, like lurking pandemics, nuclear proliferation and WAR. Of course this is just IMO... and I do note repeating... I've read many of your posts and I know your dedication to this man which is more than admirable, you back up a lot of what you say, which makes you worth my time, in addressing you and asking you these questions. I'd love for a mutually respective response.

71. neocon
"Neoconservatism is the first variant of American conservatism in the past century that is in the 'American grain.' It is hopeful, not lugubrious; forward-looking, not nostalgic; and its general tone is cheerful, not grim or dyspeptic. Its 20th-century heroes tend to be TR, FDR, and Ronald Reagan. Such Republican and conservative worthies as Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Dwight Eisenhower, and Barry Goldwater are politely overlooked."

would probably find themselves more at home elsewhere, but since you are here....

I would be interested to know what is so "hopeful" and/or "cheerful" about the message: "You better vote for us and submit to us or you're going to die."

That's how Repubs get elected. That's the biggest part of the play book. They exploit a threat, whether real or fabricated. If the threat is real, then they manipulate it to be as horrible and impending as they can, only drawing the line at not being quite as ridiculous as a Weekly World News headline. Once the threat is established, they capitalize on people's fear by claiming to be the sole source of protection. That's it in a nutshell except for the motive. And, of course, that is to get filthier rich than they already are.

76. And why?
Why would you want to post some falsified definition of neoconservatism here of all places? And don't flatter yourself thinking anyone is going to "pop an artery" over your opinion.

69. He's the single candidate that would unite the Democrats....
More than any other candidate or potential candidate he would unite. I have said I would support Clinton if she is nominated as I would any other Democrat that wins the nomination, but my heart would really be in a run by Gore.
