The Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) Wednesday presented its first unified position on Iraq, calling for a complete troop withdrawal within six months.
"We are committed to bringing all of the U.S. troops and military contractors in Iraq home in a six-month time frame as part of a fully funded redeployment plan," the 62-member caucus said in a statement.
The CPC, which includes only Democrats, called the situation in Iraq "grave and rapidly deteriorating," saying the insurgency has strengthened and sectarian violence has increased. The group said it had concluded that a military solution no longer can repair the problems in Iraq.
"We oppose sending additional U.S. troops and military contractors to Iraq and favor binding votes to block President Bush's escalation of U.S. military involvement in Iraq," the CPC said.
