Family Research Council president rails against Giuliani candidacy

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said Monday if Rudy Giuliani wins the GOP presidential nomination Democrats will take back the White House in 2008.

"If by some chance Giuliani were to gain the Republican nomination it would set up a very similar scenario that we had last November," Perkins said in an interview with Christian Broadcasting Network. "An unenthusiastic Republican base which will suppress turnout and set up a Democratic victory."

Perkins comments come just as the former New York City mayor filed a formal statement of candidacy with the Federal Elections Committee -- another step towards his likely run for the White House.

"Americans do not yet realize how far outside of the mainstream of conservative thought that Mayor Giuliani social views really are," Perkins told CBN. "Once people focus on this election and the candidates, Giuliani's lead will diminish."

In a recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll, 77 percent of registered Republicans said they wanted to see Giuliani run for president. In the same poll, conducted Jan. 19-21, Giuliani led the list of potential GOP candidates with 32 percent saying they would choose him. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, trailed Giuliani with 26 percent. Other candidates were in the single digits.

Giuliani's views on issues such as abortion has put him at odds with many social conservatives.

for just this reason. It would be great for the country. Even better, though, would be if one of the christian right's own candidates were nominated and demolished in the general. Then maybe the gop would cut that wing off for good :)

When they realize that he is outside the mainstream conservative thought, it will attract more people to him. But what is that "mainstream conservative thought"? Would that be Ted Haggerd? Would that be Jim Baker? Would that be James Tobin? Would that be Timothy McVeigh? Would that be Eric Rudolph? Would that be Tom DeLay? Would that be Mark Foley? Would that be Ken Lay? These guys have been the standard bearers of the party, they are the mainstream conservative thought.

He would easily be the most formidable opponent the GOP could muster - and - given the others in the field, the least objectionable.

I think he would be a very dangerous candidate -- he could pull in Independents and pick off conservative/moderate Dems. The crazy/religious base would have nothing to do with him, but I'm not sure it would matter.
