Why are so many people hitting rehab these days? Foley didn't need it, and neither do many of the countless number of celebs who use it.

3. I would argue you don't know what people need unless you're
a professional.

5. Rehab is today's confessional.
Confessional and self-flagellation all at once. We're still a Christian nation, after all.

13. Yahbut, this is SF. We are not exactly the puritans here. I don't think
people really care or are surprised by Newsom's philandering.

I hope he is going into rehab because he needs it. Not because he thinks SF-ians will like him better.

what this will do for his reputation now? I think he will survive this, he has been a good mayor.

14. He was obviously drunk at a visit to a local hospital recently and was
seen with a 20 yearold at an event where she was underage drinking in his company. He is going to rehab at a tough place, the Delancy Street Project. iot has a very tough reputation and is said to be only for those who are extremely serious about rehab for addiction. If he engaged in inappropriate behavior while he was drinking and it continued despite the damage to his or others lives it would cause,he has a drinking problem. It may not be cover. the secretary he did this with admitted to this inappropriate conduct herself in rehab as part of her recovery process. Its not something some people just casually confess too. some are actually disgusted with themselves over this sort of thing.

6. alcohol made him f*ck the pretty blond?
Bullhockey.

I don't even see exactly what he needs to be sorry about in the first place. He wasn't married. The blond's marital status and betrayal of said status are her moral quandry. Not his.

This rush to rehab whenever anyone "misbehaves" is getting ridiculous.

9. She was his subordinate and both she and the cuckold were his friends
When you stab friends in the back and attack their marriage, yes, that's a character issue and a pretty good sign of needing to work out some issues. I applaud his decision, even if it is a little trendy.

31. I'm aware of the details, but...
rehab? Acting like the alcohol made him do it? That's just nonsense.

I've known plenty of drunks that don't bang their friend's spouse. Alcohol doesn't make people do things they don't want to do anyway.

It's sad, but miscreant bozos in the limelight are turning it into a joke.

12. Ah ha, this funny, mayor forgets how to keep it in his pants, needs rehab...
They say it takes two to tango and mostly if you haven't learned how to keep it pants by kindergarten then you should have never been promoted to first grade. ................ ...

Just because he has a "d" in his political affiliation should not give him immunity from investigation

16. What a dope!
If a Democratic mayor from San Francisco gets beat up on Democratic Underground for going into rehab you can guess how well this is playing in moderate and conservative circles. 8-)

My uncle lives in San Francisco and says that Newsom is an enormous suck-up.

Wonder who Gavin will have to come clean with and make ammends to in whatever step in that 12 step program makes you tell all to the world.

Do all of our sins have to be on the public stage? This is entirely too much information for me.

18. San Francisco mayor plans counseling

Newsom, 39, said that although "my problems with alcohol are not an excuse for my personal lapses in judgment," he had stopped drinking and wanted professional help staying sober.

"Upon reflection with friends and family this weekend, I have come to the conclusion that I will be a better person without alcohol in my life," Newsom said in a statement.

Newsom said that he would get treatment from the Delancey Street Foundation in San Francisco and that it would not affect his duties as mayor. He is running for a second term in November.

Before taking office in 2004, he founded a wine store, a string of highly successful restaurants and the Plump Jack Winery in Napa County.

Blaming your poor judgment on alcohol. The preemptive stint in rehab. When really it is only a PR stunt or an attempt to rehab your career.

It's becoming a predictable trend.

27. Seriously, though...
To say you had an affair (at least my understanding) mean one had an ongoing sexual relationship. If he got drunk one night and did something he regrets, you can blame the booze. At some point before their next encounter, he must have sobered up and should have realized what he did was wrong. From that point, he should have made a point of either not coming into contact with her (though that probably wasn't really possible), OR not drinking when she was around (which certainly was possible), OR at the very least, making sure he wasn't alone with her (which should not have been to difficult). As I see it, "it was the booze" is just a cop-out to mitigate his responsibility.

28. Hope he needs it and isn't pandering.
Today's confessional, indeed. (nod to post above)

Joining the ranks of Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, Haggard, Foley, etc. sure doesn't help ya buddy.

I have nothing against rehab - but drinking doesn't make you an asshole....it just let's it shine.

Rehab doesn't fix that, Gavin.

30. I don't understand the hypocracy here...
We are attacking a fellow Dem here who has done a fantastic job of running S.F. He has an affair, and we call hime slimeball amongst other things. Bill Clinton did basically the same thing in the White House, and everyone gives him a pass since it was "his private business" Jeeeeeezzzzus, it's not like he's started illegal wars, killed millions of innocent people like our chimp in chief.
