Molly Ivins dies
I've just gotten word that Molly Ivins has passed away. It hasn't hit the wires yet but I'm afraid its true. I work at an organization close to Molly and we were just informed.

Columnist Molly Ivins dies

By JOHN MORITZ
STAR-TELEGRAM AUSTIN BUREAU

AUSTIN — Molly Ivins, whose biting columns mixed liberal populism with an irreverent Texas wit, died Wednesday at her home in Austin after an up-and-down battle with breast cancer she had waged for seven years. She was 62.

Ms. Ivins, the Star-Telegram’s political columnist for nine years ending in 2001, had written for the New York Times, the Dallas Times-Herald and Time magazine and had long been a sought-after pundit on the television talk-show circuit to provide a Texas slant on issues ranging from President Bush’s pedigree to the culture wars rooted in the 1960s.

“She was magical in her writing,” said Mike Blackman, a former Star-Telegram executive editor who hired Ms. Ivins at the newspaper’s Austin bureau in 1992, a few months after the Times-Herald ceased publication. “She could turn a phrase in such a way that a pretty hard-hitting point didn’t hurt so bad.”

Stand Up Against the Surge
The purpose of this old-fashioned newspaper crusade to stop the war is not to make George W. Bush
look like the dumbest president ever. People have done dumber things. What were they thinking when
they bought into the Bay of Pigs fiasco? How dumb was the Egypt-Suez war? How massively stupid was
the entire war in Vietnam? Even at that, the challenge with this misbegotten adventure is that WE simply
cannot let it continue.

Seton Hospital is not one of my favorites.

I was so relieved when she got out of the hospital but I clearly was too hopeful.

On the plus side for her, no more pain. She battled this for a long time.

357. Re: a little sadder
That's it. I'm heading for deep South Thailand for Molly.

To hell with the mafia rats in Ratchaburi and their mineral-rich paid-for coup d'etat, all the protectors of gangland dignity who can suddenly take over train stations, municipal offices, hospitals, department stores; pull off abductions of staff at a national university (moi) with police held at bay, arrange for private security arrests and lock-up, eviction from residence, privately sponsored kidnapping-lite with foreign players, occasional highway chases, grab for heavy mining rights and even the Royal Treasury itself.

They couldn't have ANYTHING to do with the recruiting of punk Muslim youth to join terror cells creating all the killing down around Yala, no way!

So, I'll just say hello as a southbounder wanting to know the truth, for Molly.

Who's turned parts of Thailand like Ratchaburi and Don Sak, Surat Thani into sub-national, local-overlord-gang-network districts? If the King only knew!

To heck with mineral extraction during a coup d'etat at and around King's College, King's County in the Year of the King. This is 2007. Going South.

Mallard,
Center of Taiwan

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.

332. From the Texas Observer website:

And for me, it’s leaving time.

I have a grandly dramatic vision of myself stalking through the canyons of the Big Apple in the rain and cold, dreaming about driving with the soft night air of East Texas rushing on my face while Willie Nelson sings softly on the radio, or about blasting through the Panhandle under a fierce sun and pale blue sky….I’ll remember, I’ll remember…sunsets, rivers, hills, plains, the Gulf, woods, a thousand beers in a thousand joints, and sunshine and laughter. And people. Mostly I’ll remember people.

There is one thing, an important thing, I have to tell you before I go. What I’m going to tell you is more than a fact. It is a Truth. I have spent six years checking it out, and I know it to be true. The people who subscribe to The Texas Observer are good people. In fact, you’re the best people in this state. I don’t care if you think that’s pretentious or sentimental—it’s just true.

If I got to naming you, I would never stop, so I won’t. But please believe me that all of you whom I know and many of you whom I know only by letter are in my mind as I write this—even if I do forget your names half the time. Always excepting, of course, the turkey who sends me hate mail after my annual gun-control editorial. Turkey, turkey, turkey.

I wanted to call this “The Long Goodbye” but Kaye won’t let me. She wanted to call it “Ivins Indulges in Horrible Fit of Sentimentality.”

I love you. Good-bye my friends.

The closing paragraphs of Molly’s goodbye column to Texas Observer readers published June 18, 1976, as she left to join The New York Times.

64. OH GOD NO
She was one of the last people on this earth who lessened my shame about being a Texan. After Ann died, Molly was my last hope. She enlightened me endlessly about how the system works, and how it fails, and how we can make it better.

Without Molly, I guess that means it's up to us. But then, it always WAS.

235. She was the one of the last who made my 23 year sojourn in Texas
memorable. I can't off the top of my head, think of any other Texas women who did that, bein' that Ann also died. Now Jim Hightower is a goodun' but he's a man. So there's that.

She was so brilliant, so scathing.

There was still so much Bush left to bash.

The reward of a lifetime, to join the divine.
Thank you God, for giving her to us when she was so very needed.
Thank you God for the rewards bestowed in Heaven upon the truly righteous, those who have given voice to the meek, vision to the isolated, and hope to the despairing.

Thank you God, for giving us such a treasure, and know that she was yeilded back with unmeasurable reluctance.

Take care of our treasure.

Texas has a pretty good record of putting out top-notch authors and Molly was in the tops. She was an editorialist who would cut through the bullshit, get to the crux of the matter and illustrate the oppostion for the fools they are.

A rare voice in this state. May God acept you into His fold. Rest in Peace, Mol

92. Damn, Tears in my eyes.
She gave to us her tenderness
Her friendship and her love
We'll see her face from time to time
There in the sky above
We grew up learning as we went
What a voyage our life could be
It took us through a wilderness
Into the calmest sea
Her words could lift us from the pain
We often found within
She said some things I wont forget
She made a few bells ring
So simple her humility
Her beauty found in grace
Today she lives another life
In some fantastic place
She showed us how to raise a smile
Out of a bed of gloom
And with her words we read
A laugh began to bloom.
She visualised a world ahead
And planned how it would be
She left behind the strongest love
That lives eternally
I have the hope that when its time
For me to come her way
That shell be there to show me round
Whenever comes that day
Her love was life and happiness
And in her steps I trace
The way to live a better life
In some fantastic place

adapted. I don't have the words meself.

I feel like I've lost a friend.
I know that's self-serving. I'm not measuring my loss with that of her loved ones, family, and dear friends.... it's just that ... who can I turn to now? Damn!

On one hand, I hope she went gently... and on the other, I hope she raged against the injustice of her short span.

She cannot ever be replaced.
She will always be remembered by those who would rattle, bang, and rage against the machine.

Blessed be, Molly.

AUSTIN, Texas - Best-selling author and columnist Molly Ivins, the sharp-witted liberal who skewered the political establishment and referred to President Bush as "Shrub," died Wednesday after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 62.

David Pasztor, managing editor of the Texas Observer, confirmed her death.

The writer, who made a living poking fun at Texas politicians, whether they were in her home base of Austin or the White House, revealed in early 2006 that she was being treated for breast cancer for the third time.

183. when Bush I was in the white house I started reading her
Edited on Wed Jan-31-07 08:15 PM by cynthia
being a Yank myself, it took a while to get used to her southern manners of speech, but it didn't take one column to recognize that this is one smart woman, who is paying attention and is going to call everyone on the carpet. She is one righteous broad! She made me laugh the first time I read her and I sought out her columns whenever I could find them. (the disadvantage of living in the north) Then along comes the internet and I never missed another one again. When Bush II was running, I thought that if everyone would read Molly, they would know that we couldn't possibly consider voting for Bush. She spells everything out so plainly with great humor.

Because of Molly, I am now politically active, I stay informed and I seek to find the humor so I won't be totally depressed.

I guess I'll have to start using the past tense when referring to her, only out of proper grammar. How does the saying go? You are not dead, until you are forgotten.

I will always remember you, Molly.

155. A tribute by Anthony Zurcher

MOLLY IVINS TRIBUTE
BY ANTHONY ZURCHER

Goodbye, Molly I.
Molly Ivins is gone, and her words will never grace these pages again -- for this, we will mourn. But Molly wasn't the type of woman who would want us to grieve. More likely, she'd say something like, "Hang in there, keep fightin' for freedom, raise more hell, and don't forget to laugh, too."

If there was one thing Molly wanted us to understand, it's that the world of politics is absurd. Since we can't cry, we might as well laugh. And in case we ever forgot, Molly would remind us, several times a week, in her own unique style.

Shortly after becoming editor of Molly Ivins' syndicated column, I learned one of my most important jobs was to tell her newspaper clients that, yes, Molly meant to write it that way. We called her linguistic peculiarities "Molly-isms." Administration officials were "Bushies," government was in fact spelled "guvment," business was "bidness." And if someone was "madder than a peach orchard boar," well, he was quite mad indeed.

Of course, having grown up in Texas, all of this made sense to me. But to newspaper editors in Seattle, Chicago, Detroit and beyond -- Yankee land, as Molly would say -- her folksy language could be a mystery. "That's just Molly being Molly," I would explain and leave it at that.

But there was more to Molly Ivins than insightful political commentary packaged in an aw-shucks Southern charm. In the coming days, much will be made of Molly's contributions to the liberal cause, how important she was as an authentic female voice on opinion pages across the country, her passionate and eloquent defense of the poorest and the weakest among us against the corruption of the most powerful, and the joy she took in celebrating the uniqueness of American culture -- and all of this is true. But more than that, Molly Ivins was a woman who loved and cared deeply for the world around her. And her warm and generous spirit was apparent in all her words and deeds...cont'd

There'll be other writers, there'll be other liberals, even other liberals from Texas, but there'll NEVER be another Molly. When I read her columns I always felt like she was sitting next to me talking to me. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

243. I will miss her.
I don't even know who most of the "media giants" are today. I don't watch talk tv, tv news, or listen to talk radio (exception: Guy James, when I can catch him), or even news on the radio outside of NPR. I don't know who KO is, I've seen Jon Stewart a handful of times since satellite tv stopped offering east coast feeds on the west coast for those of us who go to bed early, and I don't really care.

But Molly wrote. I'm a reader. I'm a former librarian. I love print.

Molly Ivins was one of the few people appearing in my local paper that I looked forward to reading. Who is ready to step in to the gaping chasm that she leaves?

I will miss her.

245. This is from a good friend's funeral. Seems appropriate at this
time.

God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be,
So He put His arms around you, and whispered "Come to Me"
With tearful eyes we watched you suffer, and saw you fall away.
Although we couldn't bear to lose you, we could not ask you to stay.
A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands laid to rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us, that He only takes the best.

Rest in peace, dear Molly.

Jesus, this is just one of those things that just catches you by complete surprise even though you've been warned several times that it might happen.

I've been reading her since I got involved in American politics and she's been an irreverent, opinionated, humourous, SANE voice who just happens to be from the heart of Dubya country. She was the TRUE Texas Daughter, IMHO.

She had a turn of phrase that would curdle milk if it was about her adversaries, yet sweet as honey if about those she respected and admired. And she called it like it was.

Damn, I'll miss her.

254. From msnbc.com
<snip>

To Ivins, "liberal" was no insult. "Even I felt sorry for Richard Nixon when he left; there's nothing you can do about being born liberal — fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed," she wrote in a column included in her 1998 collection, "You Got to Dance With Them What Brung You."

In a column in mid-January, Ivins urged readers to stand up against Bush's plan to send more troops to Iraq.

"We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war," Ivins wrote in the Jan. 11 column. "We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, 'Stop it, now!'"

She would be so proud of us if we get together and do it. That's what has to be done.

Thanks for posting a quintessential Molly quote. Now, after grieving, let us go fight. That's what she would want us to do.

260. Amy Goodman tonight
was on the KPFT Houston (Pacifica) fundraiser and quoted Harvey Wasserman from yesterday talking about Molly.

"If Mark Twain has a female counterpart on today’s political and journalistic scene, it is Molly Ivins. She has that miraculous ability to slice and dice an entire raft of political horse-dung with a single simple sentence, laced with wry, seeded with sweetness, and so often utterly cleansing and clarifying."

Damn, Sam, ladies and all others of a human persuasion. Please save the Yoplait pink lids when you see them in the stores and turn them in to support breast cancer research. Run for Susan G. Komen, buy breast cancer research stamps, and do all things to help our children keep from this kind of suffering.

that it is up to $1.5 million? Maybe it is the fact they have started splitting up their campaigns. Last year there were two.

http://cms.komen.org/stellent/groups/public/documents/komen_document/frontlinefall2006.pdf

see page 6

http://www.yoplait.com/breastcancer_home.aspx

And on edit, dismissing fundraising efforts is not going to help anyone. Yes, there are many issues that need funding, and I agree that prevention is worth a pound of cure. Nevertheless, I find it particularly noble for people to exchange research dollars by collecting a bit of trash.

274. A bit of Molly Ivin's brilliance...what we have lost!
After the last Presidential election, Molly Ivins wrote:

Do you know how to cure a chicken-killin' dog? Now, you know you cannot keep a dog that kills chickens, no matter how fine a dog it is otherwise.

Some people think you cannot break a dog that has got in the habit of killin' chickens, but my friend John Henry always claimed you could. He said the way to do it is to take one of the chickens the dog has killed and wire the thing around the dog's neck, good and strong. And leave it there until that dead chicken stinks so bad that no other dog or person will even go near that poor beast. Thing'll smell so bad the dog won't be able to stand himself. You leave it on there until the last little bit of flesh rots and falls off, and that dog won't kill chickens again.

The Bush administration is going to be wired around the neck of the American people for four more years, long enough for the stench to sicken everybody. It should cure the country of electing Republicans.

And at least Democrats won't have to clean up after him until it is real clear to everyone who made the mess.

When I wasn't seeing her columns on workingforchange.com at the regular times, I was wondering what was up as I knew she had been sick....so I'm not very surprised.
Molly spent too much time taking down the words of colorful Bubbas and not enough time talking to us in her own voice; when she did...man. I do have to remember one of them, though. Molly once quoted a stalwart from the "Texas Lege" who began a diagnosis of a political situation by saying, "the way I see the problem, if there is a problem, which I deny."
America is less of a good place if we don't do everything we can to live up to her advice which was...get involved. Get involved and fight those who would use our heritage to line their pockets, to make people afraid, and to hurt others.

Thanks Molly. Thank you for telling me about Robert Sherrill and everything else.

You did a great job going after all manners of political fools and foolery, and you knew that a quotable joke could do far more damage than a shiv between the ribs!

Molly, ya did a great job when the Nick Begich Scholarship fund brought you to Alaska, and all of us Alaska Dems fed you stories of Alaska political hijinks to rival those of Texas, and you made them into your own jokes and unleashed them upon unsuspecting Alaska pols who richly deserved them.

We'll miss you, Molly, from all corners of the country. You used your screwball sense of irony to speak truth to power, and we all loved you for it.

RIP, Molly. We'll try to soldier on. At least Jim Hightower is left to carry on the tradition of Texan political humor, mining the rich treasure trove of the unabashedly corrupt Texas lege.

And folks, if you haven't already done so, do what Molly wanted: Send a postcard to Bill Moyers (find address at pbs.org) and urge him to run for President. HE could get elected in a heartbeat, and could beat ANY Repugnican.

"Passing a tax cut that gives 42.5 percent of the cut to the wealthiest 1 percent of the citizens is, in fact, class warfare."

324. A very, very sad day
She was a great patriot and leading voice of the progressive community whose passion, honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, dedication and commitment served as an inspiration and a guiding light for liberals and progressives everywhere. Her columns and books did much to educate both me and countless thousands around the globe about the true nature of Texas politics and the true character of George W Bush and she tried to warn the nation and world about him before it was too light. She was a great visionary and educator who succeeded in effectively communicating her point of view with succinct wit, humour and accuracy. It was a pleasure and a privilege to read her columns when I had the chance to do so and she was one of the few authors who could have me laughing hysterically while at the same time reminding me of how deadly sober the state of American politics is today. She was a true, passionate and courageous patriot who stood up for her beliefs and values until the very end

I cannot even begin to convey the depth of my sadness. My deepest and most sincere thoughts, prayers, condolences and heartfelt sympathies are extended to the family and friends of Molly Ivins and all those who knew and loved her.

Rest in peace Molly Ivins. We love you and we will miss you a lot

She was one of a kind in a world full of 'just me too' types. A real American Original. Unlike Miss Ann she never took herself as being the last word, or the be all and end all - she saw the humor in herself first, and other later, which made her a laugh riot. I spend a night in Austin having a few beers with her. Damn good night that was. I will miss her so much.

347. Statement from The Texas Observer (obituary follows)
Published on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 by the Texas Observer

Molly Ivins, 1944-2007

Statement from The Texas Observer (obituary follows)

To Our Readers and Friends

Molly Ivins left her editor's chair at The Texas Observer more than 30 years ago and went on to play a larger stage. But she never left us behind. She remained convinced that Texas needed a progressive, independent voice to call the powerful to account and to stand up for the common folk. She kept our voice alive. More than once, when the paper was on the brink of insolvency, she delivered speeches and gave us the honorariums. She donated royalties from her best-selling book Shrub to keep the doors open. Her determination and efforts sustained the Observer as a magazine, as a family, and as a community.

Molly was a hero. She was a mentor. She was a liberal. She was a patriot. She was a friend. And she always will be. With Molly's death we have lost someone we hold dear. What she has left behind we will hold dearer still.

Despite her failing health, and an impending ice storm, Molly insisted on being driven to the Observer’s most recent public event in early January so she could thank our supporters.

Observer writers are useful, she explained to the crowd, in much the same way as good hunting dogs. Turn them loose, let them hunt. When they return with their prey, pat them on the head, say a few words of praise, and set them loose to hunt again.

For the time being, The Texas Observer's web site will be dedicated to remembering Molly, her work, her wit, her contributions to the political discourse of a nation. We invite readers to submit their own thoughts and recollections, to say a few words of praise.

Then, we will return to the hunt.

358. How sad for us all!
Like so many others, Molly was a real inspiration to me. 8 or 9 years ago I picked up one of her books-on-tape from a bargain bin at Blockbuster, and it is no exaggeration to say that my life has never been the same. She spurred me to take a bigger interest in politics than I ever had before, she educated me every week, and ALWAYS kept me laughing. I only wish I could have seen her live, (or better yet, met her). I owe her a huge debt in my own evolution.

361. I just recently sent an email to my newspaper, because of Molly Ivins
I knew she had cancer, and had reduced her columns, but my newspaper, The Contra Costa Times, was getting really sporadic in presenting her column. I was able to find current articles on the internet when they said they had nothing (this happened quite a few times), so I wrote them. Anyway, I will really miss her.
She had a way with words.

Rest in peace, you've done good Molly.

There's a man by my side walking
There's a voice within me talking,
There's a voice, within me saying,
Carry on, carry it on.

They will tell their empty stories,
Send their dogs to bite our bodies,
They will lock us up in prison,
Carry on, carry it on.

When you can't go on any longer,
Take the hand, hand of your brother,
Every victory brings another,
Carry it on, carry it on.

Carry on, carry it on.

There's a man by my side walking
There's a voice within me talking,
There's a voice, within me saying,
Carry on, carry it on.

391. I don't know if you would consider this a "cause", but Molly's
passion was fighting the good fight for "we the people."

IMHO, the best thing we can do to honor Molly is to do whatever we can to carry that passion on. To pay attention to what those in government, be they Dems or Repubs or Independents, are doing.

One of her last requests was that we fight the surge in Iraq. Do what you can to fight it.

And do what you can to fight bad government, no matter who's running the show.

And do it in Molly's name, and in the name of every good person in this country. And do it for yourself, too.

Your voice may be silent now (and much too soon), but your words will ring true for a very long time. You helped open a lot of people's eyes, and got to see the result of that this past election. Thank you for bringing truth and a voice of reason to a country that so badly needed both. People like you are what true Democracy is all about. You will be truly, truly missed.

395. I only recently found out about her
and from what I read she might have liked this from Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Molly was an intern there while attending college.

Her column ran in The Houston Post. When the Chronicle bought the Post & closed it down unceremoniously, all Post columnists & comic strips went to the Chronicle.

Except for Molly Ivins. Even though she was brought up in Houston, her columns weren't available in a local paper.

431. Pix of Molly in her famous red maxi-coat when she worked in Minneapolis..
Edited on Thu Feb-01-07 02:01 PM by Minnesota_Lib

Reporter Molly Ivins modeled her new red maxicoat on a downtown Minneapolis street in October 1969. “Even my worst enemies have never accused me of being style-conscious,” she wrote. “I honest to God bought the thing because I wanted a warm coat. I’d suffered through two Minneapolis winters in my sister’s friend’s car coat before I saved enough money out of my munificent reporter’s salary to be able to buy a real Yankee coat.”
________________________________________________

And here is a link to an example of Molly's early published stories in the Minneapolis Tribune where she worked the police beat (her first full-time reporting job). She became rather well-known and the police department even named their new pet pig "Molly" after their favorite newbie police reporter.

Rubin, Crowd Zero In On Honeywell

By MOLLY IVINS
Minneapolis Tribune Staff Writer

More than 3,500 people roared to their feet and cheered last night after Jerry Rubin screamed, “We’re gonna make Honeywell stop makin’ bombs and go back to makin’ honey!”

“A little off, but right on,” commented one Honeywell Project leader behind the speaker’s stand.

Rubin was the last in a series of rousers at the big yippie-rad-pacifist pep rally last night at Macalester College stadium to get ready for the action at the annual stockholders’ meeting today of Honeywell, Inc.

Honeywell Project, a long-term action group dedicated to getting the nation’s 18th-largest defense contractor out of the armaments business, has worked with Proxies for People to get anti-war sympathizers inside the stockholders’ meeting as legitimate shareowners.

432. I am devastated...
My parents were subscribers to the Texas Observer, so I read Molly almost from the time I could read. Molly was a former neighbor in Austin, and I used to run into her in the local park - she was one of the reasons I chose to live in that particular area.

Molly (and Ann Richards) represented that little sliver of Texas politics that is almost forgotten, but that makes me proud. Rush and Sean and the later pretenders of rightist talk radio pale in comparison of wit and intellect - Molly could (and did) kick their asses, column by column, and shoved stillettos so sharp that the guffaws could almost cover the pain inflicted on the right side, while the blood loss was real.

Miss you, Molly.

434. She explained the journey we were on, w/her incisive wit like no one else could
didn't mince words, didn't talk around or lessen the gravity of it, but always left us with some belief that we could fix it. It has been a terrible time in America that she was forced to confront with her writing. Too bad she couldn't live to see it hopefully get better.

I began reading her in the aftermath of the 1994 election, for solace in some way, I guess because she chronicled so well the foibles and stupidities of those who took over in Congress after that and did it with style and humor, but always in a way befitting a reporter who had once covered small-time criminals.

She went out of style for me because the anger wasn't there or there in enough force, I guess she was too nice for that.

435. We lost one of the best

While we will miss seeing another witty and well-written column or book from her, we will cherish the work we have from her and carry out her legacy: to actively protest this illegal and immoral war.

438. GOD, give us men! (and women like Molly) A time like this demands
...Strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands;
Men (and women like Molly) whom the lust of office does not kill;
Men (and women like Molly) whom the spoils of office can not buy;
Men (and women like Molly) who possess opinions and a will;
Men (and women like Molly) who have honor; men who will not lie;
Men (and women like Molly) who can stand before a demagogue
And damn his treacherous flatteries without winking!
Tall men, (and women like Molly) sun-crowned, who live above the fog
In public duty, and in private thinking;
For while the rabble, with their thumb-worn creeds,
Their large professions and their little deeds,
Mingle in selfish strife, lo! Freedom weeps,
Wrong rules the land and waiting Justice sleeps.

443. No one on the right...
...could even TOUCH her wit and grace. Precious few of them even had her tail lights in view.

"...not exactly bent double with intellect." How many write like that? Thoroughly skewered..but gently.

DAMN, am I going to miss her. So, so sad.

Godspeed, Molly...

ACLU Mourns Passing of Molly Ivins

NEW YORK - The American Civil Liberties Union today expressed its deep sorrow over the death of legendary journalist and columnist Molly Ivins, who passed away Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. Ivins was a steadfast supporter of civil liberties, and a longtime friend of the ACLU.

“We are deeply saddened by Molly Ivins’ death. She was a much-loved member of the ACLU family, and highly respected for her staunch commitment to the protection of individual freedoms. Her cutting wit, remarkable intellect and down-home wisdom will be terribly missed,” said Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director of the ACLU. The ACLU is establishing the Molly Ivins Fund for Justice and Liberty in Ivins’ honor.

Nadine Strossen, President of the ACLU, added, “Through her passionate and hard-hitting columns, Molly Ivins made an incalculable contribution to educating the public about civil liberties. Her absence will be sorely felt at the ACLU."

Throughout the years, Ivins has not only defended her own right to free speech, but also that of her political opponents. Ivins was dedicated to promoting racial justice, exposing discrimination, protecting a woman’s right to choose, and defending the rights secured to unpopular Americans by the Bill of Rights.

In recent years, Ivins, in her ever-folksy and acerbic style, used her columns to point out how the Bush administration, in the name of national security and patriotism, has infringed on Americans’ valued constitutional rights and usurped excessive power. Her appreciation for the ACLU’s work in fighting off these assaults is best understood from her own pungent words. In a July 2005 column, she wrote: “We suffer the worst attack on this country since Pearl Harbor, and the Bush administration sends the FBI after the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU exists to protect every citizen’s rights as defined in the Bill of Rights in the Constitution of the United States. The ACLU works solely through the legal system: It does not advocate violence, terrorism or any other damn thing except the Bill of Rights. Since when is that extremist? … We are living in a time when our government is investigating an organization that stands for the highest and best American ideals.”

In an interview for a documentary on the ACLU, Ivins, commenting on the importance of freedom of religion and the concept of the separation of church and state, recognized the ACLU’s unrelenting persistence in defending that ideal: “That principle," she said, "is so important that it’s worth being a pain in the ass about. And that’s what the ACLU is.”

Ivins not only supported the ACLU’s principles, but also worked tirelessly to benefit the organization. She spoke at countless affiliate dinners, and at one point resolved to do something for the ACLU at least once a month. She held a special place in the heart of the ACLU of Texas, Ivins’ home state. “Molly was a huge supporter of civil liberties and a national icon and she will be mourned by many. But at the ACLU of Texas, today we’re deeply saddened that we lost a neighbor and a friend,” said Will Harrell, Executive Director of the ACLU of Texas and a close friend of Ivins.

“Molly Ivins’ legacy will never be forgotten at the ACLU,” said Romero. “She would travel the country speaking to ACLU audiences - bringing laughter and clarity during some very troubling times. Like our founder, Roger Baldwin, who believed in the ACLU's work ‘out there,’ Molly believed in speaking to the grass roots. She was one-of-a-kind, but we will continue to do the important work that would make her proud. And we will laugh at ourselves, as she would have wanted from us.”

456. I'm Thinking Back To Around 1970 Or So......

...when Molly Ivins came by the Tejas Club at the University of Texas at Austin one evening and spoke to a small bunch of callow undergrads, myself thankfully included. As editor of the "Observer" at the time, she'd already attained local rock star status. After that evening I was a permanent fan of hers, and her passing on isn't going to change that. God bless her.
