Sanchez Accuses Democrat of Calling Her a 'Whore,' Resigns from Hispanic Group

By: Josephine Hearn
January 31, 2007 06:00 PM EST

Rep. Loretta Sanchez has quit the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, accusing the chairman, Rep. Joe Baca, of telling people she's a "whore."

Baca denied the charge.

In an interview with The Politico Wednesday, Sanchez, a California Democrat as is Baca, also cited concerns about whether Baca was properly elected Hispanic Caucus chairman in November and about his general attitude toward female lawmakers. The caucus represents 21 Hispanic Democrats in Congress.

"I'm not going to be a part of the CHC as long as Mr. Baca illegally holds the chair … I told them no. There's a big rift here," Sanchez said. "You treat the women like shit. I have no use for him."

In a statement to The Politico, Baca said Sanchez "has decided to resign from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), and has chosen to air baseless statements. Let me be clear; her comments are categorically untrue."

The last time lawmakers withdrew from the Hispanic caucus was in the late 1990s when the group's Republican members left over partisan differences.

3. She was a Republican
In 1994 she unsuccessfully ran for the Anaheim City Council under her then married name, Loretta Brixey. At the time, she was a registered Republican. After forays into politics as a liberal Republican, she changed parties, recast herself as a moderate Democrat, and dropped her married name in favor of her maiden name Sanchez.

Her voting record indicates she leans to the right.

She's a great Congresswoman. She took on Bob Dornan when no one would out of fear.

She doesn't "lean right".

28. then you are not paying attention
she is a corporate shill and adopts publican talking points. I confronted her last summer over her vote in favor of handing the internet over to giant telecoms. She had no defense except RW talking points. She likened the internet to highways, one being free & clogged, the other being a toll road and moving faster. She then said it wouldn't cost me anything! I said that's strange, I'm paying for it now. She said it would be faster - I said, I'm wireless. how much faster does it have to be?

She kept up her ridiculous defense of her vote (later, only ted stevens would sound dumber). During the conversation it became clear to me that she didn't have a clue how the internet works because she doesn't use it herself.

5. Then if she was a Republican cum DINO, then calling her a whore was being polite. But seriously...
there are certain things that take on a different meaning when you say it to a woman.

Calling LIEberman a whore is different than calling Loretta Brixley a whore.

Short answer is, you don't call a woman a whore unless you mean it "that" way.

You find gender-neutral ways to call her a right-wing DINO sell-out shill.

26. Why?
Everyone knows Dornan's voting record.

Dornan was voted out not because Sanchez was a strong candidate, but because the district received a heavy influx of Latino voters.

Sanchez changed to a Democrat because she knew couldn't beat Dornan in the 1998 Repug primary.

27. She took him on and wiped him out. In the real world, I call that a net win.
Now we have to split hairs over whether she voted the way we want on every single bill? Some here are overlooking that to take a seat from a repug in a repug district becomes quixotic if the center and right-of-center voters perceive the D candidate to be well to the left. Sanchez managed to navigate this without selling out her left-of-center principles.

Yes, I would vote differently sometimes from her - but I can say that about any M.O.C. There's a D now where there used to be an R. Keep the eyes on the prize. :-)

2. Baca is a fucking jerk.
Joe Baca, who couldn't wait for the great George Brown to die, has shamelessly supported George Bush's war as much or more than Joe Lieberman ever has or will.

Baca, with little regard for care, has cracked cruel jokes about gay and lesbian Americans for years.

He recently ran his own relative against an incumbent and great Democratic California State Senator, Gloria Negrette McLeod (a Latina) in a shitty power grab within the primary.

I stand with Rep. Loretta Sanchez, who took on Bob Dornan when others were to afraid to do so.

And if Rep. Loretta Sanchez says he called her "a whore" then you can believe her.

Baca is a fucking jerk.

The Human Rights Campaign gives Loretta very high marks. www.hrc.org

Glad to see that I am not alone about Baca. His warmongering posturing as Bush led us up to invade Iraq was reprehensible.

And his history of badmouthing gays and lesbians is legend. He has shot off his mouth for years using the most vile and derogatory terms about the gay community when he thought it was "safe" to do so, never thinking that people listen and compare notes.

Good to hear from you.

And today, the Los Angeles Times reported that another great Latina Congresswoman, Hilda Solis, is standing with Lorretta, too.

13. The problem is that if their were not these caucuses let's say
in the early 70's do you think that blacks, hispanics and women would have been invited into the "Rich White Political Men"s club"). They had to create their own groups and they did not have any significant power.

Now certain people are crying foul because these groups are powerful and want to disband them.....they claim because their is no need for them anymore, because everyone is equal you see. That is a lie....

The guys sounds like a bastard who doesn't like women.

15. A quick flip of the channel to Univision will be informative as to how hispanic males value women.
While a generalization, I often feel that television reflects the mores of a society or group. Univision, if taken to be a representative sample of hispanic interests, protrays women as sex toys and eye candy, so it's no wonder that a strong, intelligent female, like Sanchez, would be viewed with derision.

Baca needs his face slapped. Maybe the Speaker of the House or the Majority Whip should have a word with him about this form of disrespect. Most definitely the membership of the CHC should censure him. Frankly, it's disgusting for a man to call a woman a whore -- and in my book he doesn't get to pass of this mysogyny by saying she's in a man's world and should learn to take it like a man.
