Insurgents post video of downed chopper
CAIRO, Egypt - An insurgent group that has claimed responsibility for the downing this week of a U.S. helicopter in Baghdad that killed five Americans posted a video on an Islamic Web site showing the wreckage and two bodies.

The 1-minute, 14-second video carried the logo of the 1920 Revolution Brigades, a known Sunni militant group. It showed wreckage of a helicopter with bricks scattered around it. The naked bodies of two men, one with gray hair and the other with dark hair, were seen near the wreckage.

"Our heroes were able to shoot the film of the helicopter wreckage after they downed it over a roof of a house of a citizen," said a statement from the group.

Iraqi and U.S. officials said earlier that four of the five Americans who died in the downing of a U.S. security company's helicopter in a dangerous Sunni neighborhood in central Baghdad on Tuesday were killed on the ground, in execution-style shootings in the back of the head.

2. "freedom's untidy", ya know
After all, "free people are free to make mistakes and commit crimes and do bad things," or so I hear.

But I do wonder if we won't come out of this with a deeper understanding -- not approval, per se, just an understanding -- of why Saddam chose to rule as a ruthless tyrant.

4. Somebody- I can't remember who-
but somebody who studies these things suggested that Iraq was at that point of development in democracies of southern Europe in the early 19th Century. Let's see... I seem to recall that Napoleon was looking after things then.

It's not that Iraq would not eventually become a Democracy, they just had 200 years of development to go through first. It's true, they probably could have done this in less than 200 years given modern means of communication and such, but that means we attacked about 50 years too early. Of course, we could have even waited until Saddam Hussein died. But then Chimpy would not have become the War President.

5. And after Napoleon, Metternich had his way,
stifling liberal/democratic tendencies on the continent for the most part until the revolutionary movements of 1848 finally pushed him out of power.

3. it's time to stop calling them "insurgents"
the story about the "sectarian divide" is only part of the story. Iraqis are now fighting US occupation.

6. Uh, yeah
Are Iraqi insurgents "fighting US occupation" when they blow up a few dozen civilians, including women and children? You sound like you want to join the insurgents.

8. no, all I'm saying is
when we use the "official language" (e.g. insurgents) we omit any notion of occupation, so it sounds like "civil war" with no foreign invaders involved. However all this violence resulted (or at least multiplied a thousand-fold) from invasion.
