College students charged with ethnic intimidation in attack
Edited on Tue Jan-23-07 10:19 AM by Scurrilous
<snip>

"Three Guilford College students were arrested Monday in connection with a group assault on campus, according to court documents.

The documents, which were reviewed late Monday, said those arrested are accused of beating three Palestinian students with fists, feet and brass knuckles while calling them "terrorists" and using racial slurs. The documents also indicated that the attack involved "at least 15 members of the football team."

The court documents said two of the Palestinian students were severely injuried during the assault at Bryan Hall, a dormitory on the Guilford campus.

Court documents said the attack occurred late Friday, while a statement on the Guilford College Web site indicated it happened early Saturday morning."

Update: Names released in campus assault

<snip>

"Those arrested were Michael Bates, of Reidsville; Michael Robert Six, of Greensboro; and Christopher Barnette, of Semora. No ages were available late Monday.

Barnette is the second All-American player in the school’s history and is considered an NFL prospect. Six is the team’s second leading tackler.

Bates and Six were charged with three counts of assault and battery each. Barnette was charged with two counts of assault and battery. All three were charged with ethnic intimidation.

All three were released Monday on $2,000 bond.

"Such behaviors have no place at Guilford and will not be tolerated in a community that values the peaceful resolution of conflict," the Guilford statement read."

7. Probably won't be expelled, because they're athletes
If that state is anything like my state, rules don't apply to athletes. They won't even get a mild reprimand from the school.

When I was in college, a star basketball player tore up a studio and brandished a razor blade. The school wouldn't do anything to him, and he ended up later committing a rape on campus. If you're a jock, you can do what you want.

8. Star athlete certainly get too many breaks.
Since this is a Division 3 (no athletic scholarships) Quaker college, if they cannot discipline athletes, there is no hope. They shouldn't be expelled until they admit guilt or it is proven, don't want another Duke fiasco, but one that happens they should be expelled along with appropriate criminal penalties.

4. How ironic. The college was founded by Quakers.
"Guilford College draws on Quaker and liberal arts traditions to prepare men and women for a lifetime of learning, work and constructive action dedicated to the betterment of the world."

I figure after they come up with about 50 lawyers, we'll find out they are completely innocent.

and all of the people promoting the hate propaganda that got into the violent tiny minds of republicans everywhere.

"These people who beat me I had never seen before in my life," said Awartani. "They just began insulting us," he said, adding that they were being called "dirty," "terrorists" and a racial epithet. "We tried not to fight them, we did not insult them back, but they beat the hell out of us."
.
.

"We were beaten because of who we were, because of what they thought about us," said Awartani. "We were never even given a chance to defend ourselves."
