13 soldiers killed in U.S. army helicopter crash - Hostile fire possible
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A U.S. military helicopter crashed Saturday northeast of Baghdad, killing all 13 people on board, a new blow to American efforts in Iraq as U.S. and Iraqi forces prepare for a major security operation to pacify the capital and surrounding areas.

The military said the crash was under investigation. The brief U.S. statement lacked the customary comment that the aircraft was not shot down, indicating it may have come under fire by insurgents.

The helicopter was carrying 13 passengers and crew members and all were killed, it said. No further details were released, including the exact location of the crash.

The violent Diyala province sits northeast of Baghdad, and U.S. and Iraqi forces have been battling Sunni insurgents and Shiite militia forces around its main city of Baqouba for months.

......Soldiers, Marine killed

Also on Saturday, the military announced that two U.S. soldiers and a Marine were killed in separate incidents in Iraq.

A roadside bomb killed a Task Force-Baghdad soldier and wounded another Saturday in northern Baghdad.

A Task Force Lightning soldier in Tikrit died Friday when a roadside bomb exploded, and a U.S. Marine was killed in combat Friday in Anbar province.

The deaths bring the U.S. military death toll to 3,024 -- and 27 for the month of January. Seven military contractors also have been killed since the U.S. invasion.

39. Probably because
NGO's, contractors, DOD civilians and others fly on helicopters as much or slightly moreso than military personnel. When I was going on my mid tour, I had to take a Blackhawk from FOB Caldwell to Camp victory. We stopped at FOB Warhorse and the Green Zone, on my flight there was the crew (4) 2 other soldiers (myself and a PFC), 3 Blackwater guys, 1 girl working for some Human rights group and 1 female reporter. At FOB Warhorse the Reporter and the blackwater guys got off and we took on 1 more soldier, two contractors there to train police, and some lady from Denmark there to administer vaccines to Iraqis. At the Green Zone the Reporter and the lady from Denmark got off and we took on one australian soldier and one guy from Open canopy security services..........

The point is we don't know if it is 13 soldiers and may very well be very few soldiers........or all 13.........

Enveloped in a sentiment,
A sound that rushes over me.
Engage an impulse to pretend
I have a faith as pure.
Not forgetting what it means to dream.
Indulging everything.
Entertaining thoughts that I've the strength
Of those I yearn to be.
Cheers and tribute greet the saviours.
Reckless thoughts survive.
Anachronistic and impulsive.

And what will happen?
Will I dream?
I am too scared to close my eyes.
For a second please hold me.
None can change in me these things that I believe.
But I don't know what happens now.
I am too scared to close my eyes.

42. just sucks
You hear these reports, you have no way of knowing if the phone is going to ring, you pray that it's not your family member, but that means its someone else's. The whole god damn thing sucks... if they were there fighting for a cause worthy of risking lives it would be one thing. Instead they are there because our idiot in chief is trying to start world war three because he thinks it's going to bring on the rapture.

43. I couldn't have said it better.
If it isn't someone you love, then another family is paying the price. And you can never feel safe, because the next time the knock on the door may be bad news coming for you.

I don't think bush cares about the rapture, unless he's so far disassociated with reality that he's truly lost it, and that seems lately to be a good possibility. I think the bush administration is hell bent to take over the Middle East with no thought given to consequences except to line their pockets.

I wish our troops were fighting for a good cause. I don't think they're dying for no reason, though. I hope that somehow, I keep hoping, humanity will learn from the useless destruction and bloodshed. But that's very little comfort when you're grieving.

It's such a goddamn mess. I feel like things will never be right again. This war has been the most unholy, vile thing.

"An Interior Ministry official and the police in Diyala Province said the American helicopter was shot down at about 4 p.m. by insurgents who fired missiles, or possibly grenades, from at least two locations. It crashed near Tarrafa Village, they said, over a rural area near the Diyala River."
