Bush set for climate change U-turn
Downing Street says that belated US recognition of global warming could lead to a post-Kyoto agreement on curbing emissions

George Bush is preparing to make a historic shift in his position on global warming when he makes his State of the Union speech later this month, say senior Downing Street officials.

Tony Blair hopes that the new stance by the United States will lead to a breakthrough in international talks on climate change and that the outlines of a successor treaty to the Kyoto agreement, the deal to curb emissions of greenhouse gases which expires in 2012, could now be thrashed out at the G8 summit in June.

The timetable may explain why Blair is so keen to remain in office until after the summit, with a deal on protecting the planet offering an appealing legacy with which to bow out of Number 10.

Bush and Blair held private talks on climate change before Christmas, and there is a feeling that the US President will now agree a cap on emissions in the US, meaning that, for the first time, American industry and consumers would be expected to start conserving energy and curbing pollution.

'We could now be seeing the beginning of a consensus on a post-Kyoto framework,' said a source close to the prime minister. 'President Bush is beginning to talk about more radical measures.'

1. Sounds like he's trying to shine up his legacy, too. I think it's a bit
late for that, though I'm glad the moran got a clue.

None of the big Oil Co's are interested. The permafrost is melting more each year. They aren't going to invest billions into an area that will be inaccessible for most of the year.

28. actually one is...
Global warming skeptics have lost an ally. According to MSNBC, Exxon has stopped funding for skeptic groups, and is talking with other companies at a forum sponsored by Resources for the Future, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit. The think tank anticipates a report by next fall that will make recommendations to legislators on curbing emissions.

10. It will be all smoke and mirrors, like his 'surge' speech
"If mistakes were made then ultimately I am responsible..." Everyone is saying "* admitted making a mistake!" Why should this even be an issue? It's like the "* is reading a book!" meme. The reality is that he said no such thing about his role in the Iraq mess he created. "I made mistakes" is a statement of responsibility, what he said was gobbledygook.

We can expect the same thing from the SOTU speech. Lots of phrases that seem to say that * has suddenly recognized that global warming is a problem, thus giving his holy blessing to what every legitimate scientist has been saying for decades. This statement of the obvious will be followed by a series of "proposals" that will accomplish absolutely nothing but will have the Repugs and MSM positively giddy. (I can already visualize Tweety pissing in his pants.) "See what a leader he is! The Decider has Decided! The Earth is saved! Hallelujah!

We can also expect that every one of *'s proposals won't take effect until after January 2009. As far as the environment is concerned, the Decider is FIGMO.

And the words will roll forth in glowing shades of green, and six weeks later and six months later and two years later there won't be any money to pay for the happy ineffective crap he's going to spew.

File right ahead of "Moon, Base Plan For" and "Mars, Mission To" in the bulging filing cabinet of baldfaced presidential lies, and then dump the filing cabinet in the Marianas Trench, because that's exactly how much good all the SHIT he's going to say will do.

16. The focus groups must have shown this to be an issue that people care about...
So it's time to put together a shiny PR campaign and develop some one-line soundbites and talking points while keeping the exact same policies.

Yep, sounds like Washington's way of getting things done.

"The United States is addicted to oil."

Oh, by the way, you get a killer tax break if you drive an SUV.

29. Nope, Bushco is heavily invested in hydrogen
Both politically and financially. I read somewhere that either Bar or Poppy have invested in Hydrogen tech companies.

Because where will all this hydrogen come from?

From burning fossil fuels, that's where:

http://www.motherjones.com/news/outfront/2003/05/ma_375_01.html

When President Bush unveiled his plans for a hydrogen-powered car in his State of the Union address in January, he proposed $1.2 billion in spending to develop a revolutionary automobile that will be "pollution-free." The new vehicle, he declared, will rely on "a simple chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen" to power a car "producing only water, not exhaust fumes." Within 20 years, the president vowed, fuel-cell cars will "make our air significantly cleaner, and our country much less dependent on foreign sources of oil."

~snip!

Mike Nicklas, chair of the American Solar Energy Society, was one of 224 energy experts invited by the Department of Energy to develop the government's Roadmap last spring. The sessions, environmentalists quickly discovered, were dominated by representatives from the oil, coal, and nuclear industries. "All the emphasis was on how the process would benefit traditional energy industries," recalls Nicklas, who sat on a committee chaired by an executive from ChevronTexaco. "The whole meeting had been staged to get a particular result, which was a plan to extract hydrogen from fossil fuels and not from renewables." The plan does not call for a single ounce of hydrogen to come from power generated by the sun or the wind, concluding that such technologies "need further development for hydrogen production to be more cost competitive."

27. Like he changed the plan for the war?
That's all I expect to here some more spin and no real change and more likely just an 'escalation' of his already choosen direction - pray for some new technology to save us. Or more likely - pray for one of his buddies to come up with a new way to make money off the climate crisis.
