WP: Dodd to Enter 2008 Presidential Race(Tomorrow on Imus)
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/10/AR2007011001650.html

Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd, a veteran lawmaker who entered Congress in the post-Watergate class of 1974, will announce his bid for the presidency, Democratic officials said Wednesday.

Dodd, 62, will make the formal announcement in an interview Thursday morning on the "Imus in the Morning" radio show a curious bit of timing since he'll be forced to compete with heavy coverage of President Bush's speech on the Iraq war.

Dodd will travel late Thursday to Iowa, which will host the first presidential nominating caucus next January. He heads to South Carolina, an early primary state, on Sunday.

Kathy Sullivan, the chairwoman of the Democratic Party in New Hampshire, said in an interview that she had spoken to Dodd and he said, "'I'm not going to do the exploratory thing, I'm going to plunge right in.'"

The 26-year Senate veteran enters a growing Democratic field overshadowed by two likely candidates _ Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois. Outgoing Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack has already announced his candidacy, as have former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards and Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

13. I agree - especially as he is very prone to be snarky when the guest is not on
Imus said before Dodd came on that he didn't listen to Dodd when he called so he hadn't realized (when Dodd was on the phone that he was announcing). Dodd spoke of his experience - and spoke of thinking the others he was joing were good people Says he's a fresh face.

He going to forgo an exploratory committee says you can't predict this far in advance. Imus is still mad about Lieberman. Dodd said he called all the others to say he was announcing today to avoid blindsiding everyone - he does came across as nice (which he always has).

He says they should have the debate and vote on Kennedy's amendment. says people voted for change and leadership on Iraq in 2006.

Imus ignored this to take a swipe at Edwards, saying we don't need "glib trial lawyers with Madison avenue slogans" and mentioned he(Dodd)and Biden brought something to the debate. Imus told him he is still for McCain

4. As the admin, I know I should probably avoid commenting on any primary candidate.
But I just don't think that there is any interest in a Dodd candidacy.

9. And his father Tom Dodd was censored by the Senate in 1967

for using campaign funds for personal purposes and left that body under a cloud. But he was a key player in the Nuremberg war crime trials as executive trial counsel for the Office of the United States Chief of Counsel for the Prosecution of Axis Criminality and was first defeated in a run for the Senate by Prescott Bush in 1956 before finally winning a seat in the Senate two years later, so there are definitely interesting aspects to this candidacy.

Not to mention the other senator from my old home state, Joe Lieberman is a lap dog of our current War Criminal in Chief.

14. I would agree right now, but you really don't know what could happen
in the next year. Here's a scenario (I'm a Kerry person - so obviously this is not my favorite scenario, but it suggests why.)

What if:
Obama decides not to put his young family through the nastiness a primary and general election will have or if in the debates he looks inexperienced.

Gore doesn't run.

Clark doesn't run or doesn't catch fire.

Kerry either doesn't run or can't get enough oxygen to convince enough people to give him a second chance.

People reject Biden after seeing more of him.

Then it could come down to Dodd, who is experienced and genuinely nice versus Edwards as the anti-Clinton. This could look like Edwards and Kerry in 2004 - Kerry beat Edwards in the primaries because Kerry had the experience and a solidness that Edwards lacked. (Edwards was liked as a person - but he lost overwhelmingly in the primaries.)

I know little about Dodd. He gave a great speech against the torture bill. His dad had something to do with the Nuremburg trials. As one of the Kerry obsessed people, I have watched the SFRC - as an unbiased ;) observer, he is better than Biden or Obama but nowhere near as good as Kerry in terms of knowledge and the ability to get information from people on panels.

11. Latest from AP--Today 99 US Senators announced
their intentions to run for the Presidency. The only holdout thus far is Sen. Tim Johnson D-SD. Aides say he is still waiting to see how his rehab goes before announcing, or at least aides say that is what he would say if he was able to verbally communicate at this time.

(Just trying to beat the Onion to it)

16. The fewer senators from New England the better.
3 senators elected President since Lincoln.
He comes from a state we easily win.

We need more non-senators from flippable red states.
