Police Entrapment in Terror Case? NYC Subway Bomb Plotter Says He Was Set Up By Paid NYPD Informant
January 10th, 2007
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=07/01/10/151203

On Monday, 24 year-old Pakistani immigrant Shahawar Matin Siraj was sentenced to 30 years in prison for plotting to bomb the Herald Square subway station in New York City. Attorneys for Siraj said he was set up by a police informant and that the informant was the one who pushed the bombing. Siraj had no explosives, no timetable for an attack and little understanding about explosives. We speak with Siraj's defense attorney, Martin Stolar.

1. One more expendable immigrant to promote the terror meme. If true,
this is really sad. That could be you or me.

2. Sounds familiar.
In the early 70s, radical groups came to assume that the member who most strongly advocated violence was a police spy - and they were usually right. The guy who showed up with the hardest talk, and who claimed to have 'connections' to get cash, weapons and explosives, was the one to NOT talk around.

Of course, the immigrant community would not have that collective radical memory, so they'd just fall for it, get sucked in, then suddenly wake up wondering what the fuck happened.

Like this guy.

4. This is where this country is headed.
Poor guy was set up like a bowling pin so that we could all feel 'safe'.

This just makes me ill.

As John Fogerty wrote, "Don't look now 'cause it ain't you or me".

6. The attorney's story is quite compelling
(video at www.democracynow.org)

The accused is on record as saying he wasn't so sure he wants to kill people and wanted to check with his mother.
5 days later he was arrested.

16. And you, apparently.
The jury and you, apparently -- perhaps you agreed with the jury that issued the O.J. verdict?

18. They did the same thing
to that group down in Miami.

None of these folks were planning anything, until the covert op guys showed up and started pushing these ideas.

7. Here's my advice... next time someone asks if you'd like to participate in a bomb plot, decline.....

9. or report them to Homeland Security
I seem to remember that a few years ago, Patty Hearst received a package at her home filled with drugs. She didn't know what it was, and had suspicions that it might be a bomb, so she called the police to come check it out. Lucky for her. It appeared that someone was trying to frame her for receiving drugs through the mail, but her call to the police ended THAT plot.

11. It would appear that he did "decline," and that is when they arrested him.

10. Now, let's see -- what was going on around the time this
happened, that we "needed" a little reminder about terrorism?

17. You have no chance to survive make your time.
Ha. Ha. Ha.

I forgot about that! :D All your humor are belong to DU, apparently...

I feel bad for the guy who was framed, but at the same time it should be patently obvious to NOT go along with someone trying to rope you into a bombing plot! Seeing that he desired to call his mother to ask if he should go along with a bomb plot(!) leads me to suspect that this poor schlep isn't exactly all there upstairs. It's beyond pathetic the depths the "authorities" will sink to to drum up phony "terror" for political gain, and doesn't exactly inspire confidence in their abilities to deal with the real thing should it ever actually materialize.

19. i think i saw video of the sting somewhere
does anyone know what i'm talking about? The informant was really going out of his way to cajole Shahawar into becoming a martyr. As I recall it, Shahawar was relunctant, but I guess he ultimately agreed to get involved in some regard. It seemed pretty weak to me.
