KraftMaid cuts hundreds of jobs

MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio (AP) -- A cabinet maker has laid off several hundred workers at four locations in Ohio and Pennsylvania because of a slump in the housing market.
The layoffs will affect workers at KraftMaid Cabinetry in Orwell and two locations in Middlefield, both in northeast Ohio, and in Sayre, Pennsylvania.

KraftMaid's parent company, Masco Corporation in Taylor, Michigan, says several hundred layoffs are involved.

The company won't specify the number or dispute the figure of 400 mentioned by affected employees.

Company spokeswoman Kathleen Volks says the layoffs were a response to a 12 percent slump in housing starts last year.

2. I call bullshit on this. This morning's paper told me that housing was going great!
Why would they ever lie to us?

Here in the D/FW area, housing starts are still going strong, even though last year was a record-breaking year for foreclosures.

When the crash comes it won't be pretty.

5. My sympathy! We have the Las Vegas Review here, a conservative rag so bad that I
wouldn't even let a bird shit on it. The only time I ever read it is on Sunday, and that is only for the ads!
