Plan would create '.xxx' Web porn domain
The Internet's key oversight agency has revived a proposal it earlier rejected to create an online red-light district, after adding stronger provisions to prohibit child pornography and require labeling of Web sites with sexually explicit materials.

The use of the proposed ".xxx" domain name would remain voluntary, but any porn sites that choose to use it instead of the more popular ".com" would be subject to the new terms issued late Friday by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

The idea of a separate ".xxx" domain has generated significant opposition from conservative groups and even some pornography Web sites.

"opposition from conservative groups" ??? Why ???

which also perhaps explains why they apparently want to make sure than gays remain single and available.

3. They are opposed to it because it ruins their opportunity to claim plausible deniability
"Gee, I didn't realize when I clicked on it that it was a porn site, really!!!"

"So, is that why you spent two hours on your government computer looking at BigBoobies.com, Congressman?"

"Really, I was looking for...uh....boots....and I have big feet....uh....and my eyes aren't too good...I thought it said BIG BOOTIES DOT COM.....yeah, THAT's the ticket!!!!"

5. They want to create a legal reason to ban the stuff outright

If the XXX domain becomes active, all of the sexually oriented sites would navigate to that domain, the Net Nanny type software would just omit that domain, and there would be peaceful co-existence between sexually oriented sites and the rest of the internet.

How likely would an "innocent" kid come across a site they could use as evidence that the net should be censored if every site of that nature was .xxx? Even search engine results could simply screen them out.

This is what happened with cable. Since cable was able to separate adult content from regular content, there could be more freedom on cable regarding content. After all, you don't get it if you don't pay for it. With the x-rated domain, people could possibly pay for additional access to that domain as an add-on. The sites could then be more daring because everybody would know that's the red light district. And that's what the conservatives fear. There would be little political demand for net censorship if all the sites were in a single understandable domain, hampering their goal to "purify" society in their own image.

7. Whaddya know? "The company backing it, ICM Registry..."
...happens to be in the business of registering domain names, and proposes that "ICM Registry will operate the registry." :eyes:

The proposal seems motivated by something less than even good ol' fashioned prudery. It's the money, stupid.

8. Yes and in the last go around of this proposal
they were going to charge twice as much to register a .xxx domain as a .com.

The big problem with .xxx is who decides what has to go there? If it went through, fundies would want planned parenthood on .xxx domain.

10. I'm so excited over this I'm typing with one hand right now
This is a good idea. By creating a known "red light" TLD, it will make it much easier to keep adult content from the hands of children. As a previous poster noted, a .xxx domain could easily be filtered or blocked.

And regarding paying extra to register or to view content, I think this is not a bad idea. After all, adults are used to paying a bit more for their "sins." If paying a little extra ensures that it won't be easily accessible to children but for adults, I'm all for it.

15. And how long before planned parenthood
and scores of gay educational sites (some aimed at teens) get shuffled off to .xxx?

How long before no one can post any sexual education, information or even acedotes on their own sites and blogs?

The first law against obscenity in this country (the Comstock law) was used against Margeret Sanger and her birth control pamplet "what every woman should know".
