Nelson says likely Bush request for Iraq is a hard sell

BY JAKE THOMPSON

WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON - President Bush's new strategy for Iraq likely will include raising the number of U.S. troops and likely will be met with bipartisan skepticism on Capitol Hill, Sen. Ben Nelson said Friday.

The Nebraska Democrat's comments came after a 30-minute White House meeting that Bush held with a dozen moderate Republican and Democratic senators.

Nelson emerged saying he would be "astonished" if Bush doesn't order more troops to Iraq when he unveils his new plan, expected next week.

But Nelson said senators from both parties voiced doubts to Bush about any troop increase.

1. Hmmm...even the toadies won't hop
Nelson's the lilyest of livers when dealing with this mob and the easiest to sway; nice to see him taking a stand, too. (Oh, alright; he's also just the farthest right of our Senators, so maybe he actually believes in his votes...)

Junior's gonna be sauteed in public for two years, followed by a life of being ignored, vilified, ridiculed, hectored and lampooned.

Bummer.

Hopefully we can extricate ourselves from his follies and greedy blunders without wasting too much time pillorying the dick. Ah, temptation.

seriously, for a change.

He, like many of the others on Capitol Hill are noticing there is a helluva lot of writing on the wall. And he's decided to bend with the wind. I think maybe people like him ought to be reminded a few more times...

4. But he did not say he was one of those Senators
My bet would be that Nelson would continue to vote with the Republicans on every single issue including more troops to Iraq..

5. Yikes, they voiced doubts, now we are getting tough. Please!
Are they going to stop him? No. They are just voicing doubts. I know the "it is so hard" excuse, but it is never going to get easier.

6. as you're in NE
do you have any thoughts on this...

relating to the mood of the people there? Is Nelson saying this politically motivated by a change in the way Nebraskans feels about the war?
