Iraq war bred terrorism, says Chirac
FRENCH President Jacques Chirac, one of the fiercest opponents of the US-led war in Iraq, warned today that the conflict had provided a dangerous new breeding ground for terrorism.

"As France had foreseen and feared, the war in Iraq has sparked upheavals that have yet to show their full effects," Mr Chirac said in a traditional New Year's address to the French diplomatic corps.

"It offered terrorism a new field for expansion," he said, in a broadside against a conflict Washington still describes as part of the "war on terror" launched in 2001 following the September 11 attacks.

He said the war had "exacerbated the divisions between communities and threatened the very integrity of Iraq."

1. We french do not support stupid, selfish wars
My mother is from France. Most of Europe did not support this stupid war and knew it was wrong. But, France was trashed by this administration and the wingers because of it. Now, France is being proven right.
And, as always, Shrub is wrong.

2. He is absolutely right.
It was like playing with matches near a powder-keg. Absolutely tragic. And need never have happened.

7. The Europeans had two world wars on their soil in one century;
Edited on Fri Jan-05-07 05:42 PM by MasonJar
they no longer want to solve problems with wars. We wouldn't either, if the US had been the site of those disastrous invasions and wars. (In fact we here at DU so not either.) The pugs only have one way to counter opposition. They have no policy to tout so they must instead attack. On edit: I seriously doubt that the French or the Spanish or the other Europeans give a hoot what the boy dictator wants. The whole continent hates his guts. Even in Britain it's Tony not the Brits that supports the fool-in-office.
