NBC: Bush to call for more troops

<snip>

Administration officials tell NBC News it will involve sending some 20,000 additional U.S. troops to Iraq.

The plan is being called surge and accelerate: take control over violence in Baghdad, then speed up the handover of territory to Iraqi forces.

...

A former Reagan defense official says it runs counter to the U.S. goal.

"If you send another 20,000 more troops, casualties are going to go up, you're going to increase the Iraqi's dependence on us," Former Assistant Secretary of Defense Lawrence Korb said.

But hinting at his argument for a surge, President Bush wrote that the U.S. can help provide the necessary quote breathing space for Iraq's young government to meet its responsibilities.

1. Bush thinks he's a Dictator, and he will get what he wants.
To hell with the American people. Our vote in November means nothing to the SOB. The American people want OUT of Iraq. It was all based on lies from the very beginning, and we now know it.

I hope the Democratic Congress tells Bush where he can stick it on Thursday.

16. Well ...
It's only getting drafty if you think the Democrats will support one. Without the explicit consent of Congress, a draft can't be activated. I, personally, have more confidence in the incoming government than that.

Besides, even if this did get proposed, who do you think will vote for it?

take control over violence in Baghdad, then speed up the handover of territory to Iraqi forces.

Paraphrasing:

Send in more U.S. troops so there will be fewer U.S. troops.

The idiocy. It's like being stuck in traffic.

Surge, then accelerate! BRAKES!? "What are brakes?"

25. CNN: Sources: Bush likely to send up to 40,000 troops to Iraq
Sources: Bush likely to send up to 40,000 troops to Iraq

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush is likely to send anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 additional troops to Iraq as part of his yet-to-be-announced new Iraq strategy, sources with knowledge of his deliberations told CNN Wednesday.

Bush is expected to address the nation on the new strategy early next week, sources have said.

The president has not yet signed off on any changes, including a possible increase of U.S. troops, according to the sources. But he is "driving toward a conclusion" and a plan is "taking shape" and "getting more detailed" as the president puts "on the finer points," they said.

National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe denied a report Tuesday that Bush was ready to sign off on increasing troop strength in Iraq by 20,000, saying, "The president has not made any decisions."

Asked about the possible troop increase Wednesday, White House spokesman Tony Snow said Bush is "moving toward what he thinks is going to be the appropriate complex of policies to get that done."...

30. Let Congress say what it will
Nothing that Bush comes up with, even after his very, very careful deliberations, will turn his Iraq debacle into an American Triumph.

There is nothing left for us but to wait and witness the complete collapse of the Neocon Dream of of a Christian transformation of Iraq.

one that would have lasting consequences for years to come.

Congress should pass a resolution endorsing the Iraq Study Group recommendations, and should begin hearings into the possible impeachment of Bush and Cheney.

40. Aren't there some newly unemployed GOP Congressmen?
They're prime, able bodied meat that have spent the last several years talking up the war, ideally suited for a new Devil's Brigade.
Frist can be their medic, Hastur their sergeant and Tom Delay can lead.
When they need spiritual guidance, chaplain Mark Foley can lift their spirits.
And when they're confronted with a horde of Iraqi militiamen, they can whip the veil off Katherine Harris to frighten them away.

42. L'il George Dubya Told the Nation
with apologies to Tom Paxton

I got a letter from Dub-a-you
It said his latest lie was true
It's time to get your desert khaki, Jack
Though it may seem very queer
We've got no jobs to give you here
So we are sending your ass to Iraq

(Chorus) Now Li'l George Dubya told the nation
Have no fear of escalation
He ain't never been out to the boonies
And though it isn't civil war
We're sending 50,000 more
To help keep the damn Shia from the Sunnis

I jumped out of my Humvee
In search of W.M.D.
But found only a dirty shepherd teen
And though his documents he gave
We packed him off to Abu Ghraib
The waterboard will damn sure make him clean

(Chorus)

I came home from my first tour
Election said its four years more
I told my wife it hadn't been dramatic
And if I scream out "IED!"
It's just the ole PTSD
For painting schools is known to be traumatic

(Chorus)

Now I'm back here in Bagh-dad
My letters say it ain't that bad
The car bombs only go off on the hour
The Mehdi Army welcomes me
With giant flower RPGs
And candy from the snipers sure tastes sour

(Chorus)

Now I walk through this bazaar
The kids dry snipe me from their cars
My sargeant sneaks me Zoloft for the stress
Meanwhile in the old Green Zone
They think that it's a known unknown
How we can get the hell out of this mess

But Li'l George Dubya told the nation
Have no fear of escalation
He ain't never been out to the boonies
And though it isn't civil war
We're sending 50,000 more
To help keep the damn Shia from the Sunnis
