Latest news: Saddam was executed.
As reported by CNN (and apparently two Arab networks), Saddam was executed some 10 minutes ago.

103. You are probably more correct than you can imagine...
I wouldn't doubt that George and Rummy creamed their pants over this, and I'm sorry for being so blatant about it, but I've observed these guys long enough to KNOW that something ain't right about them.

Just like that British citizen, Mossam Begg (sp?) who was on Now with David Broncaccio last night. When he was being held at Baghram Air Base, he described how the interrogators (aka torturers) stripped him naked and "played" with his genitals. And, no, this isn't just to humiliate the "detainees." IMHO.

Keerist! Why is there always this homoerotic component to all the torture stories? I think it's because it's modeled all the way up the chain of command. Sicko pukes! All of 'em! :puke:

But I digress. :(

8. The NBC news guy live from Baghdad has obviously been moved
a little. A few minutes ago, just before the execution was confirmed, he was reporting in what looked like some sort of press room with a couple of decorated and lit-up Christmas trees in view just behind him. They aren't visible now. Guess somebody back in the control room at 30 Rock thought it might be kinda tacky...

Hussein executed, Iraqi TV stations report
POSTED: 10:21 p.m. EST, December 29, 2006

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein has been executed, according to two Arabic language media outlets.

Hussein was hanged before dawn on Saturday in Iraq, at about 6 a.m. (10 p.m. Friday ET), the U.S.-backed Al-Hurra television reported.

Earleri, Munir Haddad, a judge on the appeals court that upheld the former dictator's death sentence, and an adviser to Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki each confirmed the paperwork needed for Hussein's execution had been prepared late Friday.

"All the procedures have been completed," Haddad said.

At the same time, a U.S. district judge refused a request to stay the execution. (Read U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly's decision (pdf))

49. Elizabeth Vargas just stated that Saddam was "responsible for wars against
the US". He was responsible for a lot of things, but that's quit a load of historical revisionism! I expect that we'll hear a lot more in the days ahead. I'm sure that no one will mention who helped him gain power in the first place...

108. Saddam never fired a single shot at Americans, except in self-defence
He attacked Kuwait (not Americans) and Iran (also not Americans), then got invaded by Americans themselves.

And at no time did he ever plan to attack Americans. Or their interests.

Americans were his friends, who turned on him.

Edited on Sat Dec-30-06 04:02 AM by kysrsoze
Yes, Hussein was a real fuck and deserved to die, but hearing about this literally made me sick to my stomach. They snuffed him. This was the final culmination of a five-year long, government-sponsored crusade to assassinate a head of state for three purposes - to get him out of the way and shut him up, to achieve revenge for trying "to kill my daddy," and to create a media sideshow that supposedly demonstrates just how much we "helped" Iraq. Well, now that we've managed to kill more people that Saddam did, what's another three bodies? Why wasn't Hussein tried at the Hague? Makes you wonder.

105. Since you mentioned it...
There was an interview last night on All Things Considered with the President of the Washington Kurdish Institute. I don't remember his name. He said it might be good for Sadaam to remain alive to stand trial for the gassing of the Kurds, because there are countries that are complicit and who aided him in that endeavor (paraphrased, but pretty close) and that information would be disclosed.

Uh, yep...that would be the Great, All Holy, American Government. Of course, that couldn't be why we offed him so quickly. Nah!

set up the kangaroo court and hastened the execution. So much for "democracy"...at least here in this so called one (I know, I KNOW, we are a Republic), a convicted felon, sentenced to death, has access to appeals that can take years.

Saddam WAS a beast...much of it thanks to us; however, I am just so against the dp. Now, if the bastards that have screwed this country so badly end up the same way, I may change my stance, temporarily.

And, btw, welcome! :toast: (to your welcome, that is)

Saddam Hussein executed: Arab media
Last Updated: Friday, December 29, 2006 | 10:30 PM ET
CBC News

Arab media reports former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has been hanged.

Saddam was hanged around 6 a.m. local time Saturday (10 p.m. ET Friday) in Baghdad's Green Zone, according to Arab television stations Al-Hurra and Al-Arabiya.

Agence France-Presse also reported Iraqi public television as saying Saddam was dead. But there has been no official confirmation from either the Iraqi or U.S. government.

Saddam, who was captured in December 2003 following the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, was convicted in early November of committing crimes against humanity in the slaughter of 148 Shia Muslims in the northern city of Dujail in 1982.

But jeez, this was one hell of an expensive execution. In terms of dollars, yes, but also in terms of the lives of American troops and Iraqi civilians alike. And in terms of our nation's own heart and soul, so to speak. Man, we have paid a hell of a price to knock one guy off the chessboard. Is this what "mission accomplished" is supposed to feel like? At the very least, let's declare victory and get the fuck out of Iraq like tomorrow.

I mean, I was just checking Icasualties.org and noting that we'll see the 3000th US death tomorrow or the next day (take the under, or sooner, bet). D'ya think they're tryin' to pre'empt the suck-ass news with more suck-ass news of their own?

Just maybe?

All Hell will now be unleashed in Iraq. Tet and Rodney King verdict combined....

Fuck.........

Or maybe not. But I'm betting on Hell tonight.

55. I think we can all agree on one thing . . .
I cannot WAIT for the Bush "Presidency" to end.

This has got to be the absolute most shameful BLIGHT on American history. Nothing but aggresive ego wars, conflict, genocide, terrorism, dying, fear, layoffs, job insecurity, plant closings, free enterprise being all but dead, corruption, scandal, bad news almost hourly, stolen elections, the rich getting whatever the hell they want while the middle class and the poor get lead piped, corporations and religion hand in hand controlling the message, STILL no national health care, STILL no end to the Middle East bloodbath, STILL no plan on anything, a skyrocketing debt and trade deficit . . . gosh, I can just go on and on and on and on, but it's TOO FUCKING DEPRESSING!!!!

Always remember that while Saddam was a bastard, he was OUR bastard. And our own bastard continues to shit up everything he touches and gets the hell away with it because "we're the good guy$!"

No. We're not.

Collectively, as a country, we need to do something, and FAST.

57. CNN's reporter in Baghdad saying people "dancing around the bodies"
WTF? What kind of execution was it? I mean, in the US where we also conduct executions, there may be people who are "witnesses", but they aren't given access to the bodies after in order to "dance around".

I can only say that he may have been the most evil tyrant and dictator of this century (hey- and we helped make him and give him power!) but his trial and now quick execution seems like it was done in a very questionable way. I feel the US and Bush wanted him dead - very quickly. Saddam was a witness to too much that they did and provided to him.

The sad reality right now is his death will change nothing in Iraq and if anything, only more violence and he will become a martyr to the Sunni's.

Finally, I don't understand why Saddam wasn't kept alive longer to stand trial for crimes that were far far greater than the one he supposedly was hung for - oh yeah - that's because facts would have come out like the ones that would show we provided the gas that was used on Kurds. :eyes:

60. I found a dollar in my old coat
This is more important news Saddam. Saddam is a non-issue.
The fact that I considered raising the heat to 64° for the past few evenings a "Christmas present" to my family is something that really bothers me. In 2000, we always let the temperature run 60 to 64. In 2003 that range was cut to 59-62. In 2004 it was cut to 58-60. In 2005, 57-60. This year we also put a 7 minute time limit on showers. I just can't make it much colder...
I've been earing the exact same salary since 2004. I have a skilled trade. We live leaner and leaner every year since Bush was elected. Funny, in 1994-2000, my standard of living went up every year. I'm one of the lucky ones...
The fact that more and more people live in poverty or near poverty has been on my mind for years. They talk about a recession. I ask, "how will I know?"

61. The hanging of Sadam must be a huge relief to Bushes
After all, we lost nearly three thousand of our military, and God knows how many thousands of our own
soldiers have been maimed; plus thousands upon thousands of civilians getting murdered, in order to
bring "Democracy" to Iraq. Plus, Sadam won't be able to tell the real truth behind this "deal" he and the Bushes had. How barbaric.

Has Osama bin forgotten, George?" Lest you forget, he's still running free, just as you are.

69. I don't feel either elation or depression. It reminds me of how I felt
when Timothy McVeigh was excuted. It's not that he didn't deserve death - there's no doubt that he intentionally murdered countless innocent non-combatants, including personally murdering two sons-in-law. Importantly, these weren't unintended incidental deaths from combat - they were the precise targets he meant to exterminate. While I have no qualms about his execution, there still is a sadness and I make no gloat or take no glee that he received appropriate justice.

And he's in beddy-bye at probably 8:00, 8:30? Who goes to bed at 8:00, 8:30 even when they have to get up and go to work the next morning, let alone while serious news events are unfolding?

reporting on MSNBC..

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16389128/

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Clutching a Quran and refusing a hood, Saddam Hussein went to the gallows before sunrise Saturday, executed by vengeful countrymen after a quarter-century of remorseless brutality that killed countless thousands and led Iraq into disastrous wars against the United States and Iran.

The death penalty was carried out following the guilty verdict in Saddam’s trial for the killing of 148 Shiite men and boys from the town of Dujail after militants tried to assassinate him there in 1982, during Iraq’s war with Shiite Iran.

Witnesses to the execution told Richard Engel of NBC News that they were cheering around the body of Saddam after the hanging — three years after the deposed president was hauled from a hole in the ground by pursuing U.S. forces.

yes, the man was not a nice guy,

and yes, he was responsible for many deaths.

but we just arranged the excecution of the one man who was able to keep a lid on the nightmare we are now witnessing.

AND

while the boy king jerked off to thoughts of absolute control of the mideast, and all the billions he and his cronies would make off of the oil (not to mention the billions made in the arms industry), we have created exactly the new power in the region (another Iran, controlled, ruled and legislated by shaira(sp?) law) that was the last thing we wanted.

yes, we could not have fucked up more if we had intentionally set out to.
