(NY Comptroller) Hevesi Resigns
State Comptroller Alan Hevesi's spent nearly 40 years in politics, but it's all coming to an end today.

The comptroller appeared in the Albany County Courthouse just after 11 a.m. this morning where he pled guilty to a felony charge of defrauding the government to avoid indictment on charges he used state workers to chauffeur his wife.

The resignation will be effective January 1st, 2007.

Under the deal, Hevesi had to be officially arrested, fingerprinted and booked, but he will avoid prison time. Hevesi was also required to pay the maximum fine of $5,000 and a $50 fee for the processing of a DNA sample the comptroller will be required to provide.

1. He did an excellent job
too bad it had to come to this. I'm glad he won though Callaghan would have been a disaster and now they can calmly pick someone who hopefully is as competent.

4. Corruption is corruption, but this is really tragic.
He has dealt for years with his very ill wife, now he's financially ruined, he has an arrest record, his career is shattered. The only saving grace is that that his Republican "opponent" did not get in.

5. Why do you say he's "financially ruined"?
He has a pension from Queens College and a separate one for his years in the Legislature, plus whatever he gets for his term as City Controller.
