US 'troop boost in Iraq likely'

Nearly 3,000 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq since 2003
US President George W Bush is likely to boost troop levels in Iraq next year, an administration official has said.

Up to 25,000 more troops could be deployed to try to help end the violence, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The comments come a day after prominent Republican John McCain called for up to 30,000 more troops to be sent to Iraq.

The Bushies don't see the elecion as a message from the people. They see it as "they still have the presidency." The election being over just buys them some time before they have to be accountable to the people again. They can do whatever dirty, stupid thing they want to do for at least six more months into 2007. What have they got to lose?

The troops have something to lose. The Iraqis have something to lose. The American people have something to lose. Bush and the GOP don't. So they are going to do the thing that might bring them some gain, regardless of the risk and loss to everyone else.

That has been the pattern. That is why there is a conflict of interest between the leader of the country and the country he has been given control of. There are good options for the country that would leave Bush in the stinking dustbin of history. Bush won't consider those options.
