Hawaiian Air to shift some 230 jobs abroad
Friday, December 15, 2006

The call center and technology workers will all be moved to comparable positions

Hawaiian Airlines is planning to move most of its reservation call center operations to the Philippines, and its information technology and accounting jobs to India to reduce costs.

The outsourcing could affect as many as 230 Hawaii employees in those positions, but their jobs will be protected by shifting the individuals to other jobs within the company with at least the same amount of pay, according to an agreement with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 141.

Hawaiian spokesman Keoni Wagner said yesterday the airline is still conducting its due diligence with multiple vendors in the two countries, but it estimates that the outsourcing likely will take effect sometime next year.

He said the company will save money over time through attrition and by being able to fill current and future positions with employees whose jobs were outsourced. Wages paid to foreign employees also will be lower than those in Hawaii, he said.

<snip> Wagner said the Philippines is being looked at for the reservation call center and India for information technology and accounting, because those countries offer the best options for those particular areas.

2. Corporations that outsource jobs should be dismantled, their corporate
charters pulled, and their assets seized for the public good.

Mistakes we have made, which have gravely harmed our sovereignty as a people:

We let corporations live forever, accumulating vast wealth and power, which they then use against us.

We treat them as a "person," as if they had civil and human rights. Why should business corporations have "free speech" rights, to use their vast wealth to influence our political debate? Why should they be permitted to contribute ANY money to political campaigns? We permit them to buy our politicians. Their lobbyists infest Washington DC and all state capitols. Their lawyers are writing our laws!

We grant them tax breaks of every kind, bend and break labor and environmental regulations in their favor, permit them to use our infrastructure--schools, an educated work force, roads, emergency services, banking regulations, etc.--and numerous benefits of a good society, to build themselves up into giant corporate predators, only to have them to evade all taxes and outsource jobs to cheap labor markets.

We permit them to exploit our country's natural resources with no thought for tomorrow--clearcutting forests, polluting water and air, spreading genetically modified seeds, killing the planet. They pay no taxes on environmental devastation.

We have permitted them to KILL FREE TRADE, by growing into gigantic monopolies and megalopolies, which destroy competition and small businesses--the backbone of the American middle class. They have broken the back of the great American middle class!

Critically--thanks to Tom Delay and Bob Ney--big private corporations, with rightwing political agendas, now even run our election system, using TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code in insecure, unreliable and insider hackable electronic voting machines. They have direct secret control over our elections!

We have permitted them to gain total control over our public radio and TV airwaves, and to create vast corporate news monopolies that routinely lie to the American people, and skew public debate toward the rightwing corporate agenda. OUR public airwaves! We make no demands on them for fairness and public service. We permit them to control vast numbers of TV & radio stations, newspapers and entertainment venues, and to monopolize all news and opinion in regions and markets. These news monopolies do not confine themselves to news products. They are megalopolies with interests in WAR INDUSTRIES, oil, and other harmful entities. They then promote war, and the political agenda of the oil industry, in the "news."

They have even privatized the US military! Private corporate military contractors are stealing billions and billions of dollars in Iraq! Private corporate military contractors have participated in torture and death squads--and are accountable to no one!

We fail to punish them for their vast harm to our economy, to our society, to our environment, and to the planetary environment. We get NOTHING in return, for all that we have given them--not even jobs!

-------------------------------------

This seems quite a load to lay at the door of Hawaiian Airlines--but they are part of a vast and evil system of corporate domination, in which WE, THE PEOPLE, permit these giants to operate from our shores, and to leech off of us in every way--and they pay us back by outsourcing jobs!

Enough is enough! Pull their corporate charters! Dismantle them! Seize their assets! Create new, competitive businesses, whose partners are grateful for the markets WE GIVE THEM, and who are REQUIRED to PAY INTO our society!

When we have nothing left to lose, they will wish we were employed and working toward some future.

When we have nothing left to lose, the casualties will be theirs. Enjoy your luxuries today my fat friends, for when there is no way to feed my family I'll be eating your tender soft flesh, SHMG!

13. Short term, they get to put together their own airline. Long term, they get
a cut of the profits directly, and/or with a fund to benefit them and their families (health care, education, low interest loans, etc). A co-op.

No more of this trading off benefits/salaries/cutbacks (1 doing the work of 3), in exchange for getting socked in the nose with outsourcing! Enough!

The rich are ripping these businesses off, then ripping them off some more. And when they do the "some more," that should end their right to do business in the US of A. Seize their planes, seize their hangers, seize whatever assets they have lying around, and give them to people WHO CREATE JOBS HERE!

This is not communism. This is COMMON SENSE. I'm all for trade and business. I think it's a deep human need--to make products, to create, to bring variety and innovation to people, and to enjoy the great human melting pot of cultures and ideas: the marketplace.

But what we have now with these monstrous, powerful corporate entities is NOT trade. It is not competitive. It is monopolistic and fascist. It benefits no one, except the rich few. It's a long step in our political and legal systems to get to the point where we will not tolerate these highly destructive predatory businesses. I'll grant that. And workers are often sucked in by short term thinking--the next paycheck, feeding their families, meeting their mortgages, keeping some kind of job. I understand that. We need a combination of strong grass roots organization and great leadership just to begin implementing COMMON SENSE. But the great leaders and grass roots activists of past labor and progressive movements have not let "impossible" stop them. We need to start thinking long term--and for the good of the many, and the good of future generations. We need to start thinking of sacrificing for the future, instead of immediate needs and instant gratification--because as long as we're thinking of immediate needs and instant gratification, the Corporate Rulers have us by the throat. Easy to say, I know. I've never been in a labor struggle. But I have been in OTHER struggles, and have a good knowledge of history, and also of what is going on around the world--for instance, in this awesome, peaceful, democratic, leftist (majorityist) revolution that is occurring in Latin America--in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Nicaragua--and in fits and starts in Mexico. It is a rebellion against globalization--against these predatory corporate monsters that have been launched mostly from our shores, who are oppressing EVERYBODY. And one of the keys to fighting them--besides TRANSPARENT elections--is worker activism, worker coops, worker run businesses, workers' rights movements and demands for justice and equity in the use of the country's resources.

American workers need to wake up and realize that our Corporate Rulers are shitheads! It doesn't matter how productive you are, how loyal you are, how much of a creative contribution you make to the success of the business. They will screw you over! They are killing the "golden goose"--us, the loyal, productive, creative, tax-paying American work force. We have more in common with the poor of Latin America now, than we do with any US corporation or with any of the foreign corporations that the current government is selling our country to. We are the "banana republic" now! And we had better get this through our heads before they crash the entire economy like they did in 1929. WE are the MAJORITY! We can take this country back--but not if we keep compromising our rights for immediate gain and immediate security--fast dwindling gains and fast vanishing security. The only way to stabilize our country, and restore our sovereignty as a people, is to understand who is really running it, and what they are up to. Destroying our sovereignty is their number one priority! And our right to vote--the mechanism by which we exercise our sovereignty--is the number one power that they had to remove from our control into the corporate fold.

Dismantling these corporate monsters--pulling their corporate charters, and seizing their assets for the common good--is not on the immediate horizon. True enough. Giant corporations now have total control of public debate and government policy. And proposing such measures may seem wildly utopian. But I assure you that it is not. It is what any decent government would be doing. Back in Teddy Roosevelt's time, Roosevelt promised to "speak softly and carry a big stick." The big stick was for BUSTING the "robber barons"--the giant corporations of that era. It was called "trust busting." The populist movement in California, back around that time, was all about busting the railroad monopolists, and creating good government, which stands as the champion of the poor majority against the rich elite. It may seem unthinkable. It is NOT unthinkable. And it could happen tomorrow, if we can restore our right to vote, and regain majority rule. Labor and political activism--creating and promulgating the policies of the majority--is also very important. Helping people think beyond what our Corporate Rulers will permit in public debate. Think big. Think boldly. Think about re-empowerment of the people.

12. And take away Corporate "Immunity"!
I am sick and tired of Corporations and the responsible individuals running them, being immune from lawsuits if they break the law. Only the "Authorities" can prosecute them and they don't!:banghead:
It's virtually impossible to sue them and get any restitution and justice if they do you wrong.

I'm ready for the fight against Corporations and their unleashed corrupt Capitalism! Where do we start?

9. United started Mesa? That's news to me.
Mesa does operate some United Express, but it does the same for US Airways and others.

Mesa's go! would have to expand significantly to put much of a dent in Hawaiian and Aloha's near-duopoly on interisland traffic.

11. The irony is, not that long ago, we marketed Hawai'i to call centers
call centers here can bug East Coast residents at home during our business hours. :P

Unfortunately, it's not legal to pay workers $2 a day here. :sarcasm:
