MSNBC BREAKING: Kucinich will run in 2008.
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 04:31 PM by Infinite Hope
Just announced on Scarborough country that Kucinich has announced he will run.

Also in General Politics section here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x3011294

Interesting discussion in both places. Check it out and contribute to both!

The debates will be better because of this.

2. CNN: Democratic congressman plans another presidential bid

Democratic congressman plans another presidential bid

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Rep. Dennis Kucinich, an Ohio Democrat who unsuccessfully ran for president in 2004, said Monday he is planning to run again because his party isn't pushing hard enough to end the war in Iraq.

In a statement, Kucinich said he plans to formally announce his candidacy for 2008 on Tuesday at City Hall, where he served as mayor of his hometown in the 1970s.

The liberal, anti-war congressman said he was inspired to run because he disagrees with the way some of his fellow Democrats are handling the war in Iraq, including approval of a proposal to spend $160 billion more on the conflict.

21. I started with Dean and switched to K when Dean dropped out.
K had a great exit strategy already lined up during the 2004 primaries, not that anyone in the corporate whore media paid any attention to it.

People like Kucinich and Dean had the plan from the beginning that's now being recommended two years and 2,000 lives later.

19. I love Dennis, but I suspect that this helps Hillary who I'm not so crazy about.
Strategically, I worry that Dennis divides the progressive/populist voting block within the Democratic primary, and among the potential progressive/populist candidates, I think Edwards stands a slightly better chance at winning the presidency.

Leaving strategic considerations aside, I'm really glad Dennis's voice will shape the debate.

22. Not really...
He'll drop out early after contributing greatly to the debate. In the end, like last time, it'll come down to two or three candidates in the vast majority of the contests and he won't be one of them.

He never conceded to Kerry and actually picked up greater percentages (well 20% vs. 5%) in the late primaries after the nominatyion was secured. I think he even won Hawaii.

34. Kerry won by a large margin in Hawaii.
Kucinich came in second, which is better than he did anywhere else. He had a lot of support here. Kerry won 50% of the vote, and Kucinich won 26%.

I think most people would agree that Kucinich contributed to the debates by representing the interests of the left.

92. I'd hoped to see John Edwards consolidate the progressive populist vote. I like Dennis, and I'm glad
his voice will be heard in the debates, but I think Edwards has the best chance of any progressive populist candidates, and I think keeping the "real" left divided is part of the DLC primary plan to nominate a conservative Democrat.

In any event, I'm glad we'll have Dennis's participation.

P.S. Lieberman on the far right? Hardly! Lieberman represents the absolute dead-center mainstream of the Lieberman Party. How long before we have to put up with regularly scheduled nonsense speculation about a Lieberman/Chaffee ticket or -- when McCain loses the Repug nomination -- a McCain/Lieberman ticket?

26. Oh. Now that is just great. (NOT)
In two years I will get to see the hundreds of meaningless resolutions clog up the State convention.

I like Kucinich, but not for President. I appreciate his stances and that he is vocal about it.

If I had a nickel for every Kucinch person who clogged up our convention, and then later did nothing for the party, I would be rich. I didnt see that with Kerry or Dean folks.

Now, those Kucinch folks who did stick around are pretty damn good!

76. I think the dropouts will stay dropped out, and the stickers-around
--will continue to push the party in their direction. That means not just giving up if you don't get everybody to agree with you right away. 2004 taught me that there's lots of institution building and pipeline filling to be done before more people like Kucinich have the option of going all the way.

37. Facts:
Kucinich will never win the Presidency. His name is Kucinich, and as one DUer said long ago, "He looks like Howdy Doody after a three-day drunk."

Liberal Dems will need to unite behind a strong, inspiring candidate in order to pull enough votes away from Hillary or whatever other DLC darling runs to win the nomination.

Candidates like Kucinich will do nothing but split the liberal vote. Even if, by some incredible stroke of luck, he won the nomination, he could never win the presidency. The media would tear him apart.

because a) my preferred candidate, Dean, had already dropped out, and b) DK actually bothered to campaign out here, not once but twice. That kind of effort to grab our huge haul of twenty or so delegates ought to be rewarded.

This time, the Hawai'i caucus comes much earlier in the cycle, so we should have a full slate of candidates to choose from.

My Kucinich sticker has made it easy for the local media to remember who I am and that is always nice when you have a cause. Funny thing, most of them loved Dennis. Yes, right here in Kansas. We made it to the second caucus.

Holy shit! That's amazing news! I think this may be the first presidential candidate - ever - that I can get behind 100%. Very exciting news! Thanks for passing along.

73. The media will try and marginalize him - call him a socialist again,
but I think he will bring up a lot of important issues that the more mainstream candidates will shy away from, such as universal health care. I want him to be out there saying the things that need to be said. I'll support him again for that reason alone if need be.

He's my guy - unless Gore runs, in which case it'll be really hard to choose.

GO DK!

It's going to be a long time until November 2008 comes around. Anyone left standing after November 2007 will seem like very old news at that point.

80. Dennis should do research, then back and campaign for a presidential candidate
Like I am doing right now. I don't know why he is doing this. Note that I voted for favorite-son Kucinich in March 2004 because Dean had already run out of steam. Dennis got all of 4% in my district that adjoins Cleveland.

                    4%

85. No, progressives ought to just stick together in the primaries
behind Dennis instead of diluting our collective influence by each making individual judgements about who is the best of the so called electable candidates. Unite behind Dennis, stick together, and gain influence ought to be the signal that progressives send to one another during the 2008 primary season. I think Dennis can do better than 4% this time. I agree with you in that I don't believe he can win, but I'd love to see him play a role in deciding who does win and what the platform and the next administration looks like. That's not an unrealistic scenario. Maybe there are two or three people fighting it out in the primaries later than normal in 2008 and they will need Dennis' delegates. If that's the case, they will have to give us something in return.

8 years in 2016, the most likely time a new President will be needed after then next one, statistically speaking. We can't wait, we need someone like Kucinich now. This is great great news.

87. Give me a break
He has no chance whatsoever. Just another vanity candidate, like Sharpton, that wants to be seen. He knows he can't win the nomination, forget the general election.

Our party needs to get serious about it's '08 candidates. People like Hillary(NO), Gore(NOT RUNNING), Kuncinich(NO), are not going to get us where we need to be as a party or a nation.

Obama
Kerry(Still the best choice, even though fairweather dems. disagree)
Edwards
Clark

Those are the best choices. Let's get behind one of them and move forward full steam to a democratic presidency in 2008.

88. I should have supported him the last time
and I would love to see a Gore/Kucinich ticket. Now that's one that would really make me happy - if we can just keep the press - and the naysayers at DU, from running them both into the ground.

Edited on Tue Dec-12-06 03:55 PM by saracat
tickets distracts us from te real job of "winning" Volunteers are hard enough to come by and we really can't afford to waste them on campaigns that aren't credible. DK isn't and will never be credible. He is a non starter.Gore could be a contender but if he picked DK s VP,he would be toast.I was offended that you think getting the word out about certain philosophies is more important than winning. The ticket that would make you "happy" would result in our losing .That makes me"pissy" .Winning is everything. One would think we would have learned that from the Repugs!

93. How many innocent Iraqis and others will die?
Because amerikans are serious about winning?

Go team, go

Because amerikans are more concerned about winning, than about what is morally right, "You folks can just lie down now, the kool aid is on the way."

Give us a break, please.

We can and must do what is right, what is morally defensible.

We are so much better off with Howard Dean than Vince Lombardi, or some NFL nutcase trying to run a political campaign.

We can and will win progressive victories. Not because we are prettier or more ruthless. But because we stand for all citizens and for responsible government. Winning at all costs is not responsible government.

The red meat of political victory may excite the baser passions, like shock and awe, like napalm and carpet bombing, but it will never elevate the soul or bring the sort of progressive victory necessary to bring relief to the common citizen.

Once again, a presidential run with a conscience

We have little to laugh about in this town. But let's not laugh at the fact that Dennis Kucinich is running for president again.

In 2004, his candidacy was greeted here with scorn. But not in this space.

I knew he would lose, but he was saying things nobody else was saying. And now we know that the things he was say ing have all come true.

Iraq has become a quagmire. That wasn't a popular idea back then. Dennis was ahead on that one. Too many people in his own party didn't have a clue...
