Litvinenko contact 'is in coma'

A Russian businessman who met the former KGB spy Alexander Litvinenko on the day he fell ill has fallen into a coma, Russia's Interfax agency reports.
Dmitry Kovtun met Mr Litvinenko at the Pine Bar in London's Millennium Hotel on 1 November.

Mr Litvinenko was admitted to hospital on the same day and died from radiation poisoning three weeks later.

Another Russian who was at the same meeting, ex-spy Andrei Lugovoy, is also in hospital.

Radioactivity Found In U.K. Hotel Workers

LONDON -- Seven British hotel workers have tested positive for the same kind of radiation blamed in the death of a former Russian spy.

Health officials said they've ruled out any short-term risks, but low-level traces of polonium-210 have been found on employees at London's Millennium Hotel.

Alexander Litvinenko met a contact at the hotel on the day he fell ill. The former KGB agent was investigating the killing of a prominent Russian journalist and Kremlin critic before his death.

1. Well, at least they are a little more subtle than
shooting them in the head in an elevator. So they are learning as they go.

3. Gone are the days of ricin-laced umbrella tips
Ahh... the good ol' days.

This whole thing is getting creepier and creepier. I wonder if and when it will all be tracked back to Putin. The whole radioactive poisoning thing could only have been done with participation from someone in the Russian government. Polonium-210 is not the kind of thing you can just buy at the corner store.

Our friend Octafish had a thread related to the Russian component of BFEE.

It's worth a read for background on today's news.

on edit: regardless of anything else Mr. Litvinenko was murdered via exotic poisons in the UK and it is being handled as a murder case there with not much "cooperation" outside the UK.

MOSCOW (AP) - A key figure in the poisoning case of former spy Alexander
Litvinenko fell into a coma after being questioned by Russian and British
investigators, the Interfax news agency reported Thursday. A lawyer close
to the case denied the report.

Dmitry Kovtun, a businessman and former Russian agent who met with
Litvinenko in London, had developed an illness connected with a radioactive
substance, the prosecutor's office said.

Interfax, citing unidentified sources, said Kovtun fell into a coma
immediately after being questioned by Russian investigators and Scotland
Yard detectives.

But Andrei Romashov, a lawyer for another key figure in the case, told The
Associated Press that he contacted Kovtun's representatives after the report
and they told him Kovtun's condition was "the same as it was when he met
with prosecutors."

LONDON (AP) - Detectives investigating the poisoning death of an ex-KGB agent
focused Friday on a meeting at a London hotel bar where at least 10 people may
have been exposed to radioactive polonium-210.

Colleagues in Moscow hoped to question one of those people, Andrei Lugovoi -
another former KGB agent and security consultant named by British law enforcement
officials as a key witness in the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko.

Lugovoi met Litvinenko at the bar of London's Millennium Hotel on Nov. 1 - the day
Litvinenko fell ill.

-snip-

A meeting between detectives and Lugovoi "could happen today," his lawyer, Andrei
Romashov, told the AP on Friday. Lugovoi is undergoing medical checks in a Moscow
clinic for radiation.

This caper reads like a bad spy novel.
