SC: RAID MIGHT HAVE BROKEN DRUG-DOG RULES
http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v03/n1890/a06.html?999

CHARLESTON ( AP ) - The Goose Creek Police Department appears not to have followed its own rules on using drug dogs in its guns-drawn raid at Stratford High School last month.

"If you're an innocent bystander to what has transpired here today, you can thank those people that are bringing dope into this school. Every time we think there's dope in this school, we're going to be coming up here to deal with it, and this is one of the ways we can deal with it," the unidentified officer says.

The department's procedure on "illegal narcotics detection" states, "Only after the on-scene supervisor has cleared the area of all personnel will the canine enter and conduct an illegal narcotics detection."

"The Supreme Court has ruled you can search a person with a passive alert dog," said Cpl. Louis Reed of the Charleston Police Department. "We have a passive alert dog, but we still don't search people because of the possibility of someone saying something happened to them or that they felt threatened."

3. I hope heads will roll, this is total BS, and uncalled for.
The travesty in Miami was another one that should be looked into.

2. This isn't exactly late breaking...
I went to school at Goose Creek High, which is on the other side of town. (Wrong side of the tracks you might say.) Stratford is the historically white school in the richer part of town that, in the early nineties (or so), redistricting of the area made the school more diverse. My guess is that the police were targeting black students exclusively (this would be on the tape). Goose Creek is a suburb of Charleston, and is a hotbed of racism. The police pride themselves in finding "pot", and this story came as no surprise to me except for the drawn guns--very disturbing.

4. Thanks for the follow-up on this story. I wondered what had happened
there as follow-up. In "my day" that kind of Police/Gestapo tactics wouldn't have been tolerated....I found that whole incident shocking as to what SC had become. But, I'm hopeful there will be repercussions in the area against this. The videos I saw on National News were pretty "over the top." I wouldn't want that done to me or any kids of mine.

"UnAmerican" is too kind a word for cops stading over kids with weapons drawn and bringing in the drug dogs, too.

5. They have class action lawsuit going
not to mention a few students have also filed separately. I find that wonderful. Since I am a voter in the area where this should be tried I can only hope I am picked for the jury and give the kids good hard green cash so their kids will never be selected because they were poor.

6. Not poor, black. Huge difference.
And the parents on television, that I saw at the time, were black. Ha! Like the judgementalists can always be sure exactly who is "black" and who is "white", most especially in the South. They are so hypocritical.

7. Nope poor
the poorer areas had their buses arrive earlier then the other areas. I know what areas these kid live in. These kids weren't all black but I bet what all these kids had was a parent without resources.

8. my daughters school got the
dog deal. they "locked" everyone in their rooms and searched the lockers. there were no children in the halls during the search. that`s the way it`s supposed to be done. and of course they found no drugs-duh-
our police dept`s dog was murdered by a fellow officer..the dumb assed human left his partner in the car with the windows up, the car running on a 95 degree day and opps! the car quit running and cooked the dog...

10. there it is
i love dogs so much -- just in general, i hate seeing them used this way. yeah i know -- they provide a service -- but like kids, there are too many people who shouldn't be in charge of animals.
