5. Wow, this is absolutely shocking.
Relatively speaking, it is a nice place, though crime has risen in recent years (where hasn't it?). But a foreign sailor killed during a port call? I may not be that old, but it's unheard of within my lifetime.

28. I made one and the citizens of the city were fantastic!
My favorite bar out of many on that weekend was an elderly former refugee who had survived the Bulgarian pro-Nazi regime and then Stalin before becoming a Canadian. The said that he had been a refugee and that the Allies had him from starvation and retaliation from Stalin ... and bought us drink after drink after drink...refused to let us even tip the barman...and he had earlier told us he was on his pension.

6. That's one talented....
...mudderfuggin' dog (apologies to Quentin and SamJack).

Police identified and stopped a possible suspect vehicle immediately following the incident, at which time one male occupant exited the vehicle and fled. He was pursued by Patrol Officers as well as the K-9 Unit, and was arrested by the Police Service Dog. Police arrested the remaining four occupants of the vehicle. These five individuals are in police custody and are being interviewed by investigators.

12. This is terrible -- as a former Haligonian, I can attest
Edited on Sat Nov-04-06 02:53 PM by AliceWonderland
that Halifax is a wonderful place. Sackville and Argyle are down by the waterfront, where the bars and clubs are. It can get rowdy down there late at night -- possibly, it was a drunken argument that got out of control. Halifax is wonderful, but it's also an old harbour town... things can get heated in a bar on a Saturday night. However, I don't know that I've heard of any incident like this before.

21. Crime statistics
On the other hand, the national homicide rate fell 7% last year to its lowest level since 1967. In addition, the rate of drug crimes in Canada dropped 8%, the first decline since 1993. This was largely driven by a decrease in reported cannabis possession incidents.

After peaking in 1991, the overall crime rate fell steadily throughout the 1990s and remained relatively stable from 2000 to 2002. The 2003 crime rate was 15% lower than a decade ago, but 14% higher than 25 years ago.

Of the more than 2.5 million Criminal Code incidents reported by police last year, 12% were violent crimes, 51% property crimes and 37% other Criminal Code offences.

Crime rates increased in all provinces and territories except Ontario and Yukon, where they remained stable. Saskatchewan reported the highest rate among the provinces.

American sailor killed in Halifax bar fight

...Police in Halifax were interviewing five suspects taken into custody after an American sailor was stabbed to death in a bar brawl early Saturday.

About 20 people were involved in the fight at the downtown nightclub Rain, police said.

....The scuffle spilled into the street and turned violent around 4 a.m. AT, said Halifax Regional Police spokeswoman Theresa Brien.

23. The bar scene can get pretty nasty in Halifax.
Brawls are not uncommon--but ones that escalate like this are a shocker for this town. It's a wake-up call for our oblivious city government, really. They've known about bar violence for a long time, but have avoided cracking down for fear of harming tourism. Well...

P.S. That said, Halifax is actually a very friendly town, and as another poster observed, a popular place for port calls. It's a real shock that an American sailor should be the victim of violence--they're normally welcomed and treated cordially; Halifax is (among other things) a big navy town with a lot of respect for military people, and this is a terrible, sad turn of events.

24. I'm in Hong Kong which is another popular place for port calls.
Friends tell me in the old days the bars were full of brawls when the Brits and US ships gave shore leave the same days, but they finally got smart and timed shore leave on alternate days.

In the last decade I've never heard of any trouble. The bars and streets are full of US sailors when a ship's in port but they're just really nice tourists.

I guess all it'd take would be one drunken fool to change all that though and start a rumble with a triad gang or something.
