Deltona soldier killed after just 2 months in Iraq

DELTONA, Fla. - A 27-year-old Army medic from Deltona was killed in Iraq during combat, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday.

Spc. Nicholas Rogers was on patrol with fellow soldiers in Baghdad Sunday when he was shot and killed by enemy fire, said Peter Behnke, a longtime family friend who spoke for the distraught Rogers family.

Nicholas Rogers, who had been in Baghdad only two months, was married with a 3-year-old daughter. His wife, Kelly, is six months pregnant with their second daughter, Behnke said.

Rogers was a certified emergency medical technician before enlisting in the U.S. Army in February 2005. He hoped to go to school and become an emergency room nurse when he got out, friends said.
