(Rep. Jean) Schmidt angry to see 'cowards' speech in TV ad

Schmidt angry to see 'cowards' speech in TV ad

Rep. Jean Schmidt blasted Democrat Victoria Wulsin on Wednesday for allegedly breaking a U.S. House rule that prohibits using the broadcast of House floor proceedings in campaign ads.

"Her continued violation will land her in serious trouble with the House Ethics Committee," Schmidt's spokesman Matt Perin said in a release, referring to the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, which the release mistakenly referred to elsewhere as the "House Committee on Official Standards and Conduct."

Besides those errors, there's just one more tiny problem: Wulsin, who is challenging Schmidt in the 2nd District, is not a member of the House. Not yet anyway.

Wulsin's new ad shows Schmidt telling Democratic Rep. John Murtha that "cowards cut and run, Marines never do."

...

"The only person in this race who has broken House rules is Jean Schmidt," Wulsin spokesman Ady Barkan said. "If she didn't want people to see this ad, then she shouldn't have given that speech."

I can't imagine how little self-respect one would have to have for oneself to complain about someone using your own speech!

Although to be honest, I had no idea there was a standing gentleman's agreement not to use these clips in campaign ads. Of course, since Wulsin isn't a representative yet...

I didn't know my father too well, but I know from pictures that I look exactly like he did at my age. Though not so much while he was alive and older, people always commented that we had the same nose. Vanity surgery would 'fix' nothing. You can't buy the kind of sexy that comes from self-confidence.

Patty Duke show.

Meet Cathy, who's lived most everywhere,
From Sunny's bar to D.C. Square.
But Patty's only seen the sight.
A girl can see from Township Heights --
What a crazy pair!

But they're cousins,
Identical cousins all the way.
One pair of matching bookends,
Different as night and day.

Where Cathy adores a tete a tete,
White Rain mousse, and eau de Flozette,
Our Patty loves to rock and roll,
Dubya's hot dog makes her lose control --
What a wild duet!

Still, they're cousins,
Identical cousins and you'll find,
They laugh alike, they walk alike,
At times they even talk alike --

You can lose your mind,
When cousins are two of a kind.

28. As Jon Stewart said
the facts are now against the Republicans. (well, he was referring to Bush. But this works for all of them.)
And we see this every day.
Tony Snow whines that Bush "only used "stay the course" eight times". And Olberman counters with 21 separate occasions.
Don't they get it? You don't get to lie anymore. We're on to you.
9-11 isn't your "get out of telling the truth" card anymore. That's over.
No more bogus weapons of mass destruction. No more "we have the troops we need to get the job done".
Over.
The facts are against the Republicans.
If you said it, Jean, you said it. It's OUT THERE now. You can't recant.
So. Don't just say stuff. Like Rush. (He KNOWS that Michael J. Fox is faking his symptoms.)
No. You don't get to just say stuff anymore.
We're watching. We're recording.
And we're showing everyone how you lie.

33. Hilarious
She's just like Bush...show me prancing around an aircraft carrier crowing mission accomplished when it does me political good, but when it turns out I was a little jerkoff, showing it is just "Bush-hating." If you don't want your words used against you, don't say them, you stupid piece of shit. I hope she loses BAD, and it looks like a lot of GOP house seats in Ohio are going to explode because the GOP is staying home this year. So polls mean almost nothing; someone may prefer Mean Jean, but they aren't going to show up to vote for her.

57. A US House rule that prohibits using the broadcast of House floor proceedings in campaign ads?
What the hell is that about? Surely some Republican must have thought that up just after criticizing Clinton and Dems for needing to be accountable for their actions.

Sounds like the House Ethics Committee is a toothless creature that needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.

97. get rid of that rule!
what nonsense that you can't use video of your opponent on the floor! Is accountability just non-operative anymore? Hopefully that rule will be one of the first things to go when the Dems take back control of our country.

66. i found a rule relating to the use of televised hearings in campaigns
Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 05:40 PM by onenote
I assume that there is a similar rule for the televised proceedings of the House itself. Of course, there isn't much that the House can do about it unless the person violating the rule ends up getting elected and comes under the jurisdiction of the House, in which case the House could "censure" them or something, althoug I doubt it would happen.

A more interesting issue: if they used footage from C-SPAN, is there a copyright issue? (I should know the answer to this, but honestly I'm not sure and haven't the time to research it. Anyone know the copyright status of C-SPAN's transmissions)?

69. On a realistic note
this is Cincinnati & its Eastside Suburbs. she won against Paul Hackett, that DU darling, in 04.

if she loses & a Democrat represents any portion of Cincinnati again (Tom Luken was the Democratic rep in CD 1 for my entire youth), it is an upset of major proportions.

when that decayed twat Schmidt called Murtha a coward, while quoting a Marine reservist who never went to combat, she deserves what she gets.

I can't get straight to the poll, but here's the web site.

Wulsin has been endorsed by the Cinncinnati Post and the Dayton Daily News. http://www.wulsinforcongress.com/

Dang. I can't afford to but I have to send a few dollars to Wulsin!

95. excellent comments posted on Cinci Blog on Mean Jean:
"Even if she could be forgiven for those remarks, there are a few other problems. First, the state rep she claims to be quoting in that speech has said he did not say what she attributed to him. That's called lying. Before that there was her promise to invesitgate the styrene leak and hold those responsible accountable. Never happened. Since then, she was caught claiming to have Steve Chabot's endorsement. Whoops, Chabot didn't endorse her. Then she said Tom Tancredo endorsed her days after her rival Bob McEwen had an immigration hawk in for a fund-raiser. Whoops, Tancredo didn't endorse her. Then she claimed that the Family Research Council endorsed her. Whoops. they're a non-profit. Can't endorse anyone. NExt, we have the claim that she earned two degrees from the University of Cincinnati. Whoops, she didn't have two degrees. Rather than apologize, she claimed that she did the hours but never picked up the degree because her mother dided. Whoops. Her mom died in 1990, 6 YEARS after she took her last class and one year after she first ran for office. When she first ran for office in 1989, she toled the Clermont Sun she had two degrees and was a teacher. Whoops... she never taught anywhere. Then in 1993 she told the Sun and the Enquirer she had two degrees. She repeated the lie in 1997 and again in her own wrods she told the League of Women Voters the same thing in 2000. She also told the Sun and the Enquirer the same thing in her 2000 run for state rep. Lucky for her, the Ohio Elections Commission could only go two years back. But she LIED again when she told the news media the mitake was made for the first time by her web designer and she never looked at her own website.

SIDEBAR: has anyone here worked on a campaign where the candidate did NOT obsess over every item that had his or her name on it? Including the website? END SIDEBAR

Now she shows her ignorance of the House rules. She's been there for a year.

For her to call criticisms of her public statements and voting record "personal attacks" is also way out of line considering that her entire caampaign has been a personal attack on Dr. Wulsin."

96. So let me get this straight....
We can not show video of Congresspeople doing their job poorly in campaign ads, but it is perfectly fine to run ads about a guy who ACCIDENTLY called a phone sex line AND HUNG UP IMMEDIATELY?

Testimony before Congress is supposed to be public record, we should be able to use it for whatever we want to use it for and it makes me sick that Congress tries to protect themselves so much. If they are so proud of their service they should have no problem with us watching their testimony.

105. Mean Jean threatens YOU TUBE for violating House ethic rules?
Post on Cinci.com political blog:

Has YouTube received a hostile letter from Schmidt threatening to turn them in to Fat Denny Hastert for violating House ethics rules? Wouldn't be surprised. She might want to think twice about messing with them, since they are now owned by Google, which has enough money to buy her district and exile her.
