LAT: Nicaragua to join nations banning all abortions
Nicaragua to join nations banning all abortions
By Hector Tobar, Times Staff Writer
October 26, 2006

MEXICO CITY -- Nicaragua's legislature Thursday is expected to approve a law that outlaws all forms of abortion, including those procedures intended to save the life of a pregnant mother.

The measure has been supported by most major political parties, heading into the Nov. 5 presidential election, as they seek to win over voters in this overwhelmingly Catholic country. Leaders of the Roman Catholic Church helped draft the bill and have mobilized followers to support it.

Medical associations in Nicaragua and international human-rights groups have strongly criticized the proposal.

Since the late 1980s,Latin America's El Salvador and Chile have adopted similar measures. At least 34 countries, mostly in Africa and the Middle East, prohibit all abortions, without exception, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights, a nonprofit advocacy group based in New York....

Leaders of the leftist Sandinista National Liberation Front and the ruling right-wing Liberal Alliance have said their representatives would vote for the proposal...."The current law allows a small door in which abortions can be performed, and we are trying to close that door," said Dr. Rafael Cabrera, an obstetrician and leader of the Yes to Life Movement. "We don't believe a child should be destroyed under the pretext that a woman might die."...

2. Will they be the next nation to shoot abandoned children as vermin?
The first thing tyrannies control is the women. The men think that's just fine. Then they control the men.

........Ipas estimates that 32,000 illegal abortions are performed in Nicaragua each year, many under unsafe conditions. Only 24 abortions authorized by law have been performed in Nicaragua in the past three years.

5. The new Dem platform to get votes
Aside, women seem to be returning as chattel. How anyone can support Catholics is beyond me. Kill the woman and allow the child to live.

Anyone who donates to Catholics donate to women returning as chattel.

6. "Anyone who donates to Catholics donate to women returning as chattel"
Does that mean John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi, Ted Kennedy?

Do you mean Catholic Charities, one of the best and most efficient charitable organizations?

I'm not really sure what you're getting at exactly.

9. Well that's a damn shame.
Catholic Charities provide essential services to the needy across the world.

I'm sure those folks can go without though...

8. FSLN is old politics, just like the right wingers...
Only the Sandinista Renovation Movement supports legal abortion if the life of the mother is in danger, even though FSLN used to suppport it.

Very interesting article in Spanish:

10. It was basically illegal under the Sandinistas too.
Nicaragua never legalized abortion under Daniel Ortega, always posing as the ardent Christian. The left in that country never consolidated within the FSLN. You always had the Socialist, Communists, and Marxist-Leninist Party to the left criticizing the Sandinistas. Were I in Nicaragua, I would vote for Ortega, but I realize he's not a real progressive.
