Bush Administration Eases Limits on Same-Sex Schools
WASHINGTON — The Bush administration is giving public schools wider latitude to teach boys and girls separately in what is considered the biggest change to coed classrooms in more than three decades.....

Education officials initially proposed the rules in early 2004, pointing in part to some U.S. research suggesting better student achievement and fewer discipline problems in single-sex classes including math and foreign languages.

After receiving 5,600 public comments, education officials said they were moving forward with the plan with some wording tweaks and assurances from Attorney General Alberto Gonzales that it was legally sound.

Critics who compare the plan to "separate but equal" segregation-era classrooms haven't been so sure.

The National Organization for Women says it creates the risk of breeding second-class citizens. The American Association of University Women has said it would "throw out the most basic legal standards prohibiting sex discrimination in education."

1. Separate is NOT Equal.
Oh yes, in addition to homophobic and racist, BushWorld is going to throw in a little misogynist on the side.

They're vomit! :puke:

4. I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with same-sex schools
PRIVATE ones. Not ones paid for with taxpayers' move (shades of VMI and the Citadel).

12. Absolutely
The government cannot run such schools as it violates Brown v. Board, but private same sex schools are probably the way to go.

Girls benefit in sciences and math as they dont have to compete with the bias towards men in these subjects. They also benefit from not being sexualized at school and can focus on learning a bit more.

Boys can benefit from toning down the girl impression bullshit and actually ask a question every once in a while.

Have mixed functions, share cheerleaders and sports teams with a sister school, and have combined dances.

This is worth considering. Many schools I attended (and later worked in) were meat markets, and classwork was a distant second or third to many kids, and this was in an upper class school. (proved true in a poor minority school I later worked with).

Again, the gubment can't do this, but more private schools should.

Oh, and flame away.

5. Last-ditch effort to get the fundies out on 11/7
They're still pissed about Foley. A littel 19th-century dogma will bring some of them back to the flock.

7. Why is this objectionable?
If the research shows that all kids do well in single sex classrooms then why not try it?

Frankly, anything that would change in Chicago would be welcome. The public schools are an open sewer.

9. If all things were 'equal' it wouldn't be objectionable...
But, they aren't.

10. I wouldn't have a problem
If the parents had a choice, and busing was provided to a reasonably close facility that had the course they preferred.

black only and white only schools. Because segregation is segregation no matter what face you put on it.

Let's face it, white kids learn better without black kids disrupting the class. *wink*

"it would "throw out the most basic legal standards prohibiting sex discrimination in education."

why stop there, why not go racial at that point? oh wait, they will.

14. Hey, look at the progress!
Now, Dubya, all you have left to do is to substitute 'marriage' for 'schools'!

15. It really bothers me that Hillary Clinton supports this
Edited on Tue Oct-24-06 06:00 PM by journalist3072
"Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (news, bio, voting record) of Texas and Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton led the way in 2001, pushing single-sex education options in the No Child Left Behind law."

From AP article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061024/ap_on_go_ot/single_sex_schools_3

Hillary Clinton is giving me fewer and fewer reasons to support her, if she decides to run in '08.
